I thought the episode was fine but I do like the politics of Kings Landing a lot more.

I had forgot about the break in the battle at the wall though...Jon now goes out to treat with Mance and all that. So I'm not sure now exactly what they'll cover next week. They only have an hour...We'll see....

Q: Maybe I missed something, but if the gate opens by moving up and down (perpendicular to the floor), why were the mammoths pulling on it laterally with ropes? Unless they were hoping to pull it completely off, they'd never open it that way. Also, if all it takes is one giant to lift the gate, why didn't he just lift it six feet and prop something under it? They could've sent the whole army through.

Okay, yeah I get it, it was very obvious from the start that it wasn't the full force of a hundred thousand wildlings, but make me experience that while I watch the episode, don't show a one-sided beating followed by "oh if they do this again we're screwed because of that huge wildling army hidden in those trees over there". Scare me, make me feel like the crows beat the odds THEN tell me they haven't accomplished squat.

Oh well, I still enjoyed the episode very much.
Exactly. You have a 100,000 man force? Show it to me! Make me feel what those guys on the wall are feeling, looking at that huge mass of enemy forces. The after-the-fact explanation that this was just a skirmish because they were just being tested didn't make the battle itself any more interesting. It was long and it was not an epic battle.

I think ripping it completely off was the idea.

Yeah, the giants seemed about 1/2 as smart as the mammoth, just brute force machines. So yeah, I think the original idea was to just tear it the f' off, but the one giant improvised when he saw his brother giant go down. Remember, it has been stated several times that Mance's army is impressive only in it's number. No military order or plan. Just numbers and strength. And apparently, for a lot of you, they didn't represent that well enough.

The battle scene was poorly done. Not up to par for the series. Looked like they just had too much fun focusing on grotesque battle injuries as opposed to creating an epic scene. Too gimmicky.

I actually enjoyed the episode. I thought it was well executed. Sure it wasn't "Epic", but I thought it was well done.

I will say that the only thing I didn't like was how Ygritte's death was handled. It had that "meh" feeling too it.
