Sooooo I just found this series about a month ago, and I have to say that I absolutely love it! The wife and I went through seasons 1 and 2 in about 3 weeks. Which was hard because we had to wait for the kids to go to bed before we could watch. So, as I'm looking for season 3, I find out that it won't come back till NEXT year? WTF? I guess that's how HBO rolls, though. Great stories, but it did seems like some characters did get lost for quite some time. And like a few others, I found it a bit hard to follow who the characters were, and how they were each related to each other. I mean, it took me about 15 episodes to realize that the dragon chick was related to the Mad King. But I'm pretty sure I have them all in order now. I'll have to go through them one more time just to make sure.
HBO has some good material on their website for keeping track of the characters and who is related to who. After each episode, my parents call me up and I have to explain things to them for 15 minutes. It took weeks for them to separate the "blonde people" from the "really blonde people".
You can always read (or listen to) the first two books as extended cuts of the first two seasons, since about 2/3 of the material is cut. There are minor changes here and there (moreso in the second season), but the main storylines are essentially the same. The TV show left out some great Arya material from the second book, but then all of the Arya/Tywin scenes were completely original and some of the best parts of the show.
Yeah, I downloaded the first book last night hoping that I actually read it. I tend to start books, and never finishing them.
One thing this series has taught me, is that no character is safe. Watching the episode where King Joffrey asked for someones head, and the wife and I were like, "Yeah, okay. Like they're REALLY going kill this character off". And then it's like, "okay someone is going to step in anytime time now......umm, okay..... some going to wake up from their dream riiiiiight?........holy ****, they ACTUALLY killed them off?" Total disbelief, but it happened.
