The only thing about that KITW is the dread wonder that is going to be missing. I was a big fan of a certain character and when his fate was undeclared for such a long time there was the joy of speculating and the excitement when their fate was revealed. Anticipation is truly a wonderful thing. I get it...the show can't have a major character go off the board entirely for 2 seasons...that's why the books are an altogther different experience.
There is a lot that is going to be missing but why should that be some sort of measuring stick of how good or bad this is? The fact is if the source material is from another media so the new creation (TV show) is nothing more than an interpretation. Like Jackson's LOTR or a gazillion other examples. You can't judge the GOT TV show by how close they copy the books. You judge it by how entertaining it was. I don't know why fans get they panties in a bunch when something is done differently or there is a missing scene. Big deal. Somethings do not translate well to the screen...maybe this "dread wonder" you mention is an example.
I remember going to see the first Dune movie (David Lynch) who tried to put in the film Paul Atreides "thoughts", which is a major part of the book, by using an unseen voice (almost a whisper). It was a mish-mash of non-sense and ended up being a freaking disaster. You just can't do some things....the GOT TV show is nothing more than that...the book interpreted. Take it for what it is worth.

There were some a couple brief mentions of that character while he was missing that did reveal what was happening to him. The makers of the show did a great job of giving Jamie material in the second season when he barely showed up in the second book. The Jamie/Robb scene and the Jamie/Alton scene were both exceptional.

George, where are you at with the book series?
MARTIN: Well, I’m writing book 6, The Winds of Winter. I’m starting to worry because everybody keeps asking me, “What are you going to do, if David and Dan and the show catches up to you?,” and I didn’t think it was a problem before, but they’re moving faster than I am and it’s beginning to scare me. I have not failed to notice this. I feel sometimes as if I’m laying track for a railroad and I can hear the locomotive coming up behind me. It’s building speed and I see the smoke and I hear the whistle coming, and I better keep laying that track pretty fast ‘cause I’ll get squashed, if the locomotive comes. But, I still have a pretty considerable lead, or at least that’s what I’m telling myself. Season 3 is only the first half of book 3. Season 4 will be the second half of book 3. And then, I have book 4 and book 5, and those are gigantic books which have to be recombined because they’re actually parallel. I’m hoping those will be at least two seasons, maybe three. That will give me some time to finish book 6. By the time they’re doing that season, I’ll be writing book 7. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.
