I dig this show, but I will admit that I don't keep all the characters straight (never read the books, and probably won't). Can someone explain to me why they were killing the babies? I remember there was a scene where they were talking about pushing common folk out of the towns and into the countryside. Was this related to the baby killing, or something different?

All of King Robert Barratheon's (Dead drunk King) bastard children have/had his dark hair. All his 'true-born' kids from Cersei are blonde.
In order to back up Joffrey's claim to the throne, Cersei has ordered all of Robert's bastards killed. Some of them were merely babies.

and Queen Cersei's babies are blonde because she had been sleeping with her brother for years. Incest = Joffrey shouldn't be king.

this is an appeal to the BOOK readers. How much interest is there in starting a GAME OF THRONES:THE BOOKS(SPOILERS ABOUND) thread? I have so many questions and thoughts and I do not want to ruin the experience for non-book readers. Should we start an exclusive thread where we can discuss things to come on the show?

I almost feel there should be a separate thread for the book related questions. I'm afraid to read posts here

We don't spoil here BB. I've read (and reread) all the books and would never want to cheat anyone of the joy (pain) of discovering what is on the next page/episode of this great work.
JD launch that spoiler thread, I look forward to discussing the direction we think GRRM might be going, as well as the divergence between page and broadcast.

Not gonna get spoilery but even the smallest role on the show is cast so well. Characters that either don't have huge parts or...get sent to the corn field are cast so well that I don't want the inevitable to happen. Could name names...but I won't.
