Not going to analyze the episode or anything like that...but it's been touched on here and I think it's a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiig deal. This show is going to be in serious trouble going forward. Quality story telling is all well and good, but an audience doesn't want to see everyone they cheer for getting killed. When the only people left that you like don't have the "ability" to get the bad guys in any serious ways, there's a real good chance people will stop watching. That's how TV goes. After the first season with Ned, there was a lot of rah rah revenge things going on and now there isn't a legacy (of sorts) that can carry that out. Killing off all the likable "good guys" (and yes I know that's opinion and whatever) doesn't feel like a smart thing. I know that's what the books are and yada yada...but people aren't going to wait for a payoff for another five years. It doesn't work that way. Audiences don't like to be punished again and again. Eventually more people act like Naysay and just check out and that's when you start having more issues. Deviating from the source material so it's "happier" and that sort of thing. As much as I love this show, I can certainly imagine execs being TERRIFIED to air this episode and knowing how it could turn out for this cash cow.

Turning on my psychobabble hat...I wonder if this a case of a nerd with a great imagination projecting his anger on the jock type guy that always beat him. So, he thinks of ways for them to be punished under the guise of "yeah well real life". jd, we saw him at the GoT panel and can't you just see him sitting on his couch giggling maniacally and pointing saying, "THAT'S WHAT YOU GET MR. ALL-STATE QB!!!!!" when it all starts going down? It seems like every time the Starks get ahead, and like it or no they're the heroes in this show, Martin goes all Lucy and pulls the football out and then takes Theon's nuts and goes home.
Naysay checked out? Did he? Interesting....his loss.

As to whether people will stick with the show: That might apply to TV but it obviously didn't with the books. Martin himself said he did lose readers after B3 but gained MORE. I'm not sure if that applies to TV but it's a good indication.

The bottom line if the show begins to suck they'll lose viewers. If not, I'd doubt it....

Here's the real difference between books and TV.

    Time.

If I read a book I understand that I'm giving up a fairly large time commitment. I expect less "fan service" out of books because there is less immediate competition for that time. If I don't read The Great Gatsby this month it will always still be there for me. If I don't watch Game of Thrones on Sunday night I risk finding out what happens and that ruins some of the fun.

    SO.......

When I invest in a show and I tune in for 10 weeks at a time and then patiently and eagerly wait months for a new 10 week cycle and then find out that 3 of the 4 adult protagonists that I assumed the show was built around are all now dead (Ned, Cat, Robb)....

    well.....

    ugh.

I'll probably keep watching but I only have so much emotional capital to invest in these shows. With Netflix and Hulu and cable and shows like Walking Dead and Breaking Bad... I just can't physically and emotionally handle EVERY SHOW I WATCH being a gut wrenching trainwreck of emotional realism.

I'm already out on Walking Dead because at some point.... just..... ****ING ENOUGH ALREADY.

The Kings being deep in the playoffs the last two seasons hasn't helped either.

And I'm not intending to criticize Game of Thrones.

I think it's an awesome series and I'm thrilled to live in a world where HBO was willing to go ahead and make a show that they knew would be so gruesome and brutal and intelligent and booby.

I love Game of Thrones. I just don't know if I want to love it anymore.

I'll probably love it again in a day or two. Sue me.

Wait until Dany releases the dragons on the 7 Kingdoms. There will be hell to pay.

If the quality of writing, acting and production is maintained in each season, then the survival of individual characters is not critical to the success of the series. It is the overall feeling of immersion in this strangely beautiful, violent and sensual world that captures our hearts and imaginations. Thus far, the producers have been hugely triumphant.
