It's hard to try to separate the Books from the TV show but ultimately there isn't much the producers can do. The story is what it is. You either like it or you don't. Martin's way of doing things definitely stretches his fans to a breaking point but like I said earlier they seemed to have stayed with it...I think.

However, if one chooses to stop watching because of what you mentioned...there's nothing wrong with that but the creators have to stick with the story. But...they need to continue to make it GOOD at the same time (ie watchable). Tough job.

**** yas all Theon is gonna surprise(this is not based on the books) just my love af a flawed character.

Ok...Look. The Starks did have their war with the Lannisters. Guess what...

    THEY LOST

It's just not the outcome you wanted. Guess what. The good guys don't ALWAYS win. So someone else who is either good, or less bad, fills the void and takes up the mantle. As long as there are black hats there will be white hats to fight them.

And the Walking Dead sucked BECAUSE NOTHING HAPPENED. A bunch of dead end characters got dead ended. Do not even come into a discussion of a show like GoT where both the source material and adaptation are tremendously written and compare it to a show with flawed source material and an inert tv show that uses death to manipulate you into thinking something 'heavy' happened.

The white hats fit many of the characters still alive. It is the White Walkers after all who pose the greatest danger. Two strong women immediately come to mind in the greater struggle: the blond Queen and her dragons; and the fiery red head from north of the wall.

I HOPE they don't stray from the books. I don't know that they will either. Just pretty sure the execs over at HBO are likely veeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyyyy curious to see how ratings go over the next season.

To your last point, it's a VERY tough job. Just making a show good is hard enough. When you test the limits of what audiences are typically willing to take (that includes the violence and nudity), it's a whole bigger question.

The more I look at it, the more I like the Starks getting their asses handed to them.

The simple fact is, they are too self-righteous for their own good. All Stark characters (except for Snow, maybe) have this certain moral "smugness" to them. The exact same attribute that made heroes likeable throughout the ages, because people related to their struggles against "evil" enemies.

But guess what, it actually feels good to have a series that doesn't nurse you in the illusions of grandeur.

Remember Braveheart? Damn, watching GOT is starting to make me hate that movie, and I was once revering it.

Very true. I was going to speak up on the mentions of Walking Dead as well. Game of Thrones is superior in every way to what the Walking Dead has turned into. That show jumped the shark in season 3 in a big way and became FAR less interesting than it was in season 1 or 2. Game of Thrones on the other hand just had its most memorable moment and continues to get more incredible. @#$% the Walking Dead and its transition to humans becoming the main threat instead of zombies (just put up a chain link fence and you'll be fine).

I only bring up TWD because it resonates on the payoff thing. Lost started losing viewers when the audience had enough of the cliffhangers, TWD is wearing on its core audience because it feels stale and forced, GoT risks losing viewers because of killing off the "good guys". All different reasons, all from the same emotion. You want the satisfaction of seeing the "right" people win. When that doesn't happen, people tend to go away. It has happened time and time again. Let's take a look:

    1. Lannincesters get caught, try to kill a 10 year old boy. Their punishment? They get the head cut off of the father of said boy.
    2. Joffrey beats/tortures/humiliates daughter of Behead Ned. His punishment? Gets a hot wife.
    3. Eldest Stark decides to take up arms to avenge his father. Pushing Lannisters back. Needs troops so he ignores his mother. His reward? Theon burns his city down and kills lots of his friends.
    4. Eldest Stark LISTENS to his mom this time after learning his lesson. His reward? Watching his pregnant wife stabbed in the belly, gets shot full of arrows, and his mothers throat gets slit.

At a certain point an audience just says, "meh...not a fan of seeing this happen." Yes. The good guys don't ALWAYS win. How about having them at least win something? How about having them go out honorably? Midieval "torture porn" isn't the way we want to see our heroes die. Not all the time at least. I know there is more to come and the stories aren't done and people will have their revenge...but not having a Stark swing the axe so to speak won't feel right.

I find it interesting that most of the book readers of this series are the ones saying it's ok. I wonder how much of that is because that's how it was written versus you thinking it makes for good TV. Also, by good TV I don't mean entertaining. I mean strategically in the interest of holding viewers.

well...keep watching. Or walk away and risk seeing comeuppance(that may or may not come). That's the argument in a nutshell.

    I'm not walking anywhere. :P

...and I already know what you're talking about because I have a friend who thought I had read the books so this whole thing and some others weren't surprises.
