Yeah, they're condensing for the sake of time, I would think, more than budget. I mean, do they really need to show the siege (was it Storm's End?) when they basically pull the same gag twice in the book? This way, it resonates more. And then there's the whore who seems to be replacing, like, three whores. And the Arya story is skipping along to the important parts only. And I was bummed a little in season 1 when they stole Tyrion's battle by having him knocked out at the get go. Just adding as much simplicity as they can when it comes to characters and the time they have.
As for the over explaining, you don't get the same feel for the characters as in the books, so they have to spend a little more time setting things up. Especially if you're gonna end up cutting stuff.
But hey, they're doing a good job and Martin's there advising, so I'm good with it.
It's so compelling as a story about people sometimes you forget this is a fantasy story.
And I don't know that they've addressed this in the show yet, but now that there dragons in the world again (they've been gone for 300 years), magic everywhere is growing stronger and more effective.

That's a great point Darby...that the mystical is growing with the return of the dragons. Well done.
So the scene in the last episode that setup the traveling group (with the young Stark daughter) showed a town / keep that been burned down, and it was referred to as having been done by dragons. Was this something left open to further clarification, or should we assume that dragons exist apart from the baby ones kept by queen blondie of death valley?
No...Harrenhall, like Littlefinger said previously, was cursed. I think they are referring to it being burned by Dragons in the time before they disappeared from the Earth. It's kinda like Swamp Castle in Monty Python and the Holy Grail where it has a history of being destroyed and built back again.
The blondie's ancestors conquered the entire country using dragons hundreds of years ago. During the conquest, the dragons burned and basically melted Harrenhall, which is one GIANT castle. But then the dragons died out and the only ones left in the world belong to the chick in the desert.
And everyone says Harrenhall is cursed mostly because practically everyone who's been in charge of it has come to a very bad end. Also, they say it's haunted.

The events that continue to occur in Harrenhal in the books do nothing to dispel those thoughts...
I'm actually a bit torn about reading the books and watching the series at the same tme. I'm reading Clash of the Kings right now and I'm a bit ahead of the series...which is cool, because you get more background info about the characters...but also sucks because you already know what will happen in the next episode.
