Saw a midnight showing of DBAOTD show last night. It definitely has del Toro's fingerprints all over it (which is def. a good thing, to me, anyway), and seems to explore a few of the themes common to his other movies. I liked it a lot but I have a couple of issues with it too, that I'll express if and when we (hopefully) have a spoiler-filled discussion once more people have seen it.

A lot of horror movies are pretty deep and have an emotional aspect, and GDT's horror is a really good example of that.

This is a HORRIBLE movie and a defilement of the original. I won't get into spoilers but the original clung fiercely to the less-is-more philosophy and worked solely because you feared the things in the dark. Atticus you MUST see the original. This is like the runoff from good Del Toro movies padded out ridiculously to 90 + minutes. Heartbreakingly faulty logic and horrible characters doom this. It's terrible...really terrible. Complete and utter disappointment. All this movie demonstrates is that in someone else's hands(Troy Nixey) Del Toro's work can lose it's magic very quickly. STAY AWAY FROM THIS AT ALL COSTS.

Say it ain't so! Say it ain't so!

I haven't seen it so I can't agree or disagree, but as a whole, it seems to be getting mixed reviews.

WHOA!!! I was NOT expecting that!

The lack of a less-is-more philosophy and logical holes were two of the big complaints I had too, but I liked it overall. I suspect if I'd seen the original, I wouldn't have liked this one. I'll check out the orig. for sure.

Short Film of the Day: Latchkey’s Lament | Film School Rejects

The short film that got him the DBAOTD gig. He may have talent but the movie was a series of horrible plot holes, suspect 'rules', and overplayed creatures(that really shouldn't be that scary if you are over 6 inches tall and have access to a steady light source). Also haven't we already been through the 'fairies who feed on human teeth' GDT chestnut. I HATE this movie. It's that bad.

Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark: Movie Review

I wanted to love this film, there are some many great parts to it but unfortunately it doesn’t add up to the whole that I hoped for. That being said, there are some quality elements to it that if you’re not a crazy cinefile like me, you probably won’t notice them and have a fine time. I have a low threshold for horror but found that I could easily make it through this film. Yes the opening and moments of the film are tense, but for the most part this is a very easy to watch film to watch or bring a date to.

Of course exposing the creatures also exposes the way too numerous to mention flaws in how the rules concerning the creatures are utilized. And the characters are so self absorbed that you want them to get dragged into the walls. To say this was heartbreakingly bad is an understatement. This movie is an insult.
