Holder insists on another season of 'The Wire' | The Examiner | Yeas & Nays | Washington Examiner

Attorney General Eric Holder has something to say to the creators of HBO's Baltimore crime drama "The Wire": Bring it back.

Holder gushed about the show, which went off the air after its fifth season in 2008, as he spoke alongside several of the show's cast members Tuesday at the Justice Department. "Having looked at those clips again, I'm reminded how great that series was," he said. "I want to speak directly to Mr. Burns and Mr. Simon, do another season of 'The Wire.' ... I want another season, or a movie," he implored, hoping his instructions would make their way back to creators Ed Burns and David Simon. "I have a lot of power," he chuckled.

I posted this on the AMC thread already but now it looks like Boardwalk is up against it too. I would understand if these were middle of the road shows but you could argue that they are the tentpoles for their respective networks. Ridiculous.

THE WIRE Creator David Simon Responds to U.S. Attorney General

Last week, Attorney General Eric Holder, a fan of the show, directed comments at the show’s creators saying “Do another season of The Wire…I want another season or a movie.” Well, creator David Simon’s response may surprise you. Hit the jump to see what he said.

Last week, Holden invited some cast members from The Wire to Washington in order to take part in an announcement about an anti-drug campaign he’s currently running. He directed his attention to the creators specifically, saying:


“I want to speak directly to [Co-creator Ed] Burns and Mr. Simon: Do another season of The Wire. That’s actually at a minimum. … If you don’t do a season, do a movie. We’ve done HBO movies, this is a series that deserves a movie. I want another season or I want a movie. I have a lot of power Mr. Burns and Mr. Simon.”

Simon responded thusly (The Atlantic Wire via SlashFilm):


“The Attorney-General’s kind remarks are noted and appreciated. I’ve spoken to Ed Burns and we are prepared to go to work on season six of The Wire if the Department of Justice is equally ready to reconsider and address its continuing prosecution of our misguided, destructive and dehumanising drug prohibition.”

Game, set, match. I guess Holder forgot that the creator of an insanely smart series focusing on drug trade, government and bureaucracy, and the media in Baltimore probably knows his ****.

Sundance Documentary ‘Knuckle’ To Become HBO Series

Though Knuckle premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, it didn’t generate quite the same buzz that many of its fellow documentaries did. But well before the film showed up in Park City, several outlets were already interested in purchasing the film so they could remake it. Knuckle, directed by Ian Palmer, follows a real life feud between two families in Ireland. The feud, which has been raging for decades, is documented over the course of 12 years. It fairly regularly culminates in violent bare-knuckle brawls between family members. It’s a riveting and upsetting film that, in the end, sort of loses steam.

HBO acquired the rights to Knuckle at the festival and are now developing it into a new drama series. Irvine Welsh, the writer of the novel Trainspotting, has been hired to write the pilot and Jody Hill, director of Observe & Report and co-creator of Eastbound & Down, will direct.

Floored. It was a bold move but I'm not sure if the show is going to be as compelling.
