Disney Would Prefer ‘The Rum Diary’ Didn’t Exist, Bans ABC Networks From Talking About It > The Playlist
The Bruce Robinson directed film screened over the weekend at the Austin Film Festival, but THR reports that no ABC affiliates were allowed to shoot or talk to Depp due to a draconian clause in his Disney contract involving the ‘Pirates’ movies. Because there is nothing kids love to watch more than entertainment news on their favorite local TV station.
“We came here expecting to talk to one of the biggest names in Hollywood,” said KHOU News reporter Shelton Green who openly noted the ban in his report from festival. “But apparently, Disney doesn’t want Johnny Depp’s new movie premiering here at the Paramount [Theatre] to get more exposure than his new ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movie. So, they wouldn’t allow us to interview him nor would they even allow us to get video of him, but hundreds of other people did.”
By the way, I did see the movie on Wednesday, and it was about what I expected. Good, but not great. Some fantastic moments, but the overall story is missing some elements that you need to push it into the next level up. Like an ending.
I totally get wanting to be true to what Thompson wrote/lived, but it's incredibly anti-climactic. Not bad enough to ruin the movie, but enough to almost make you wish they would have strayed from reality a bit more and even gone a little more conventional for it.
But still, I enjoyed it.
The Rum Diary Blu-ray
If that's it for the special features, I'm definitely not bothering with this.Sony's Blu-ray presents the film in its 1.85:1 aspect ratio with a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track. The disc also contains a number of bonus features, including:
Two behind-the-scenes featurettes:
- A Voice Made of Ink and Rage: Inside The Rum Diary
- The Rum Diary Back-Story
The Rum Diary streets on February 14th, 2012.
Rob Marshall to Direct Steven Sondheim’s INTO THE WOODS for Disney; Gives Brief Update on PIRATES 5
Marshall also gave a brief update on Pirates of the Caribbean 5. I thought On Stranger Tides was by far the worst of the Pirates franchise, so I’m not too keen on the idea of Marshall returning for a fifth installment. No director is officially attached to the all-but-guaranteed sequel, but Marshall appears to be in the know as he said it’s currently in the script stage:
“Terry [Rossio] is writing it and he’s working incredibly hard and he did a draft and rethought it all and started working on it again. You want to make sure you are asking the audience to come back to see an exciting adventure and it has to reach that caliber, and if not there’s no reason to do it. I know Johnny feels the same way: He needs to see a script, but he would be happy — if it’s the right script — to put that hat and sword back on.”
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer previously said as much, revealing that they had a script but decided they could do better, so they went back to the outline phase. Rossio scripted the four previous Pirates entries with partner Ted Elliott, but he’s working on the fifth film solo. Essentially, though, the status of Pirates 5 depends on whether or not Johnny Depp is happy with the script.
**** all you haters...you too Doc.

William Fichtner Replaces Dwight Yoakam in THE LONE RANGER
THE FICHT!!!!!!Production is currently underway on director Gore Verbinski’s big-budget iteration of The Lone Ranger, and a last minute casting addition has been made. Given that the film was put on hold for a bit while Verbinski and Disney retooled the budget, the production schedule was pushed back. As a result, Dwight Yoakam was forced to drop out of the pic last week. While I’m sad to see Yoakam go, I think Verbinski’s found a suitable replacement. Deadline reports that William Fichtner (Drive Angry) will fill the bad guy role that Yoakam had previously been set to play.
