More worthy of mention is the general reaction to Melancholia, the film that Von Trier brought to the festival. Some are calling it a boring, pretty slog while others are calling it his best yet. Frankly, I’d be worried by anything else- divided opinions on a Von Trier film means things are right as rain. In general the reactions seem to mirror those that came out from Tree Of Life earlier in the week. I was able to see that film yesterday, and I now assume the same will be true for both director’s cosmic-scaled films of birth and death… how much you appreciate them relies entirely on how you approach cinema as a viewer, and what you’re looking for from a few hours in a dark theater.

    I still haven't seen Antichrist!

I don't know. I have mixed feelings in regards to Lars Von Trier. Dogville made me sick, lol, and Dancer in the Dark made me want to cry, lol!

I think he channels Carl Theodor Dreyer quite a bit. Have you peeps seen any of his work? You should. It's pretty disturbing for his time. Day of Wrath is such an awesome film.

Anyhow, Lars Von Trier pushes it further than Dreyer and he does get the results that he wants, that is, to make films that won't leave you. I do have to watch Antichrist one of these days. It's just that I know it's one of those films that I will have to watch when I am in that kind of weird mood because I am sure that it's rather disturbing.

I think the Dreyer comparison is a good one. I've only seen a couple Dreyer films, but I loved them. Dude knew how to create atmosphere.

Lars Von Trier Thrown Out Of Cannes | Movie News | Empire

Lars von Trier, the cardinal of chaos, has been thrown out of the Cannes Film Festival. His lastest film, the widely acclaimed Melancholia, was expelled from Palme D'Or competition and the director declared "persona non grata" after he admitted sympathies for Hitler and claimed to be a Nazi at a festival press event.
The key word in von Trier's bizarre riff is probably "joke" but if he had his tongue in his cheek, it was lost on the festival organisers. The director has since released a statement claiming that he'd been provoked by journalists, denying that he was anti-Semitic and insisting "nor am I a Nazi".
Geez. I know the dude likes to rile people up, but he's going to shoot his career in the face if he doesn't start being a little more careful.

I heard the question and answers. Seemed like a guy who was trying to be funny in a second language. Didn't come across well. . .but I thought he sounded more like an idiot than an anti-semite. Probably a case of the festival organizers not wanting to invite the sort of press that those comments would no doubt do.
