THE COUNSELOR Review. THE COUNSELOR Stars Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt | Collider

In his crime thriller No Country for Old Men, author Cormac McCarthy’s prose is taut, tense, and doesn’t waste a word. Unfortunately, his literary style doesn’t translate well to his script for The Counselor or Ridley Scott’s direction. The film is ostensibly in the same vein as an unforgiving, ruthless crime flick where greedy people get in over their heads, innocents get caught in the crossfire, and only the most ruthless thrive. This vibrancy fades in and out through the picture, but it’s usually overshadowed by forced, awkward monologues that cut the tension in favor indulgent pontification and dime store philosophy.

Review: 'The Counselor' Starring Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem, Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz & Brad Pitt | The Playlist

There’s also a bit of misfortune that “The Counselor” is largely making a point seen in two recent foreign films, Claire Denis’ upcoming “Bastards” and Jia Zhangke’s “A Touch Of Sin.” Both elegantly weaved narratives that illustrated the harsh reality of how violence trickles through the cracks in society’s class structures, carefully deploying a sense of righteous anger at the inequities of their respective societies. Here, it feels more simplistic and far less righteous, drawing a line between the order of this financial high life and the corruption and arbitrary violence of lower-class Mexico day laborers, a comparison that only comes across as condescending when we’re asked to feel for The Counselor’s white collar plight. The matter in which the “haves” in the film use the “have-nots” for manual labor, and how it’s bound to bite them in the ass, is emphasized by the repeated closeups of Malkina’s pet cheetahs, who hunt freely for her pleasure before being chained up and placed back in custody. That Reiner is oblivious to Malkina’s own plot to usurp his power is clear enough: the fact that she has elaborate cheetah tattoos dotting her back is the sort of touch that suggests Scott not only thinks audiences won’t understand what “The Counselor” is about, but that he feels the need to remind himself as well. I made the mistake of watching the 2nd half of Eden Lake. Came across it on TV (uncut, I think it was Sundance) and had no idea what it was, but kept watching because of Fassbender. SPOILER ALERT......
I didn't know there was such a thing as Hoodie Horror, and I wish I could go back. The violence was grueling and there was no revenge satisfaction, but even worse was the predictability. I hate movies where there's nothing but a relentless chain of bad things happening to innocent people, especially when you see each thing coming from 30 yards away. I don't mind movies that are ridiculously horrific, but this one was horrifically ridiculous IMO.
