Cannes Review: Nicolas Winding Refn’s Low-Slung ‘80s Crime Drama ‘Drive’ Has A Dark Majesty > The Playlist
Quote:
Some will object to Gosling’s lack of backstory or motivation for his criminal acts, but if we had to choose between a movie that leaves these things to the imagination or over-elaborates them with the rambling sweaty eye-shifting tale-telling of a bad liar, I’ll take the former. “Drive” works as a great demonstration of how, when there’s true talent behind the camera, entertainment and art are not enemies but allies.
Ryan Gosling and Nicolas Winding Refn to Film ONLY GOD FORGIVES
Man oh man, Refn is striking while the iron is hot...and he apparently loves him some Gosling.Quote:
Ryan Gosling has officially shot out of a cannon. The Blue Valentine star seems to be attached to a plethora of projects these days and he is already making of habit of working with Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine). Now he is in talks to reteam with Nicolas Winding Refn, the director of Gosling’s upcoming film Drive. Considering Ramses went bananas for Drive at the Los Angeles Film Festival, I think the two teaming up again is a good sign. Their new film is titled Only God Forgives and will also star Kristin Scott Thomas with a planned fall start date. However, Refn and Gosling aren’t stopping there. They are also headlining Warner Bros’ remake of Logan’s Run. For more on Only God Forgives and Gosling’s other projects, hit the jump.
While Twitch had early word that Refn and Gosling would be working on Only God Forgives together, it was Variety that confirmed that Gosling was in negotiations to star. Luke Evans was originally set to star, but had to back out because of his role in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit. Twitch also had this synopsis of the film:
“Julian is on the run from the British police. He runs a Thai Boxing club in Bangkok which is a front for a drugs smuggling operation. He is well respected within the criminal underworld, but deep in his heart he feels that his life is lacking something. He meets a retired cop, The Angel of Vengeance, and finds out that he has to confront his mother.”
Comic-Con ‘11: Nicolas Winding Refn Says Getting His Cast Together For ‘Drive’ Was “Like Sex” > The Playlist
Quote:
“It’s like playing Russian roulette. Once you realize the casting is in place, it’s like sex. You realize it’s not going to get any better,” said Refn about his film that boasts Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Albert Brooks, Christina Hendricks, Ron Perlman, Bryan Cranston and Oscar Isaacs.
New red-band trailer for Refn's DRIVE, which left Cannes stinkin like burnt rubber!
Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news.
Gotta say...lotta buzz on this overheard in lines at SDCC. Folks who saw the crazy 'time stands still' in a elevator scene are talking about this flick. Most of the preamble is...'I had no idea about that, but now...'. Refn has, what could be his real introduction to American fans. Big win for them bringing this to the con.
