PT Anderson is the closest we'll ever see to another Kubrick. Hell, Lars von Trier is closer to Kubrick than QT, and I LOVE QT.
Lastly, Chris Nolan is every bit the hack that QT is, except QT's movies don't pretend to be "smart" genre films.
Nolan's average direction turned a taught, brooding Swedish thriller into a trudging exercise in thumb-twidling as the audience waits and waits and waits for some sort of meaningful payoff that eventually arrives but never satisfies.
Inception was so much style when all it really needed was more substance. It was a Michael Bay picture with prettier costumes and better haircuts. Totally forgettable to its core.
As for the Batman flicks, they certainly were good for comic book movies but when you compare them to all films outside of that tiny sci-fi sub-genre, you realize just how average they truly are. Remove Heath Ledger's masterful performance as the Joker and you're left a long-winded film noir version of the Iron Man franchise.
So maybe hack is a bit harsh. I think he's just average, always.
My head just exploded but I'm gonna resist. I can do it, I can do it, I can do it, I can do it...
