Kurt Russell And Sacha Baron Cohen Exit DJANGO UNCHAINED! Who Will Replace Them?
Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news.

    Remain calm. All is well.

Yes, it's incredibly disappointing to learn that Kurt Russell has bailed on Quentin Tarantino's DJANGO UNCHAINED (which is still shooting in New Orleans), but the production hasn't missed a beat. Russell's role of Ace Woody, a vicious underling of Leonardo DiCaprio's Calvin Candie, will not be recast; his part has essentially been absorbed by Walton Goggins, who plays the equally nasty Billy Crash. It's up to us fans of JUSTIFIED and THE SHIELD to explain to the rest of the world why an expanded role for Goggins is wholly acceptable.

As for why Russell left the production, I've talked to a few folks in the know, and they all say no explanation was given. It was not a dramatic departure; Tarantino quickly readjusted, and that was that. There was no "walking off the set", and Russell's exit certainly had nothing to do with Sacha Baron Cohen dropping out.

I've asked around, but no one seems clear as to what's going on with Cohen's role. Cohen was to appear as Scotty Harmony, a wealthy social misfit who acquires a female slave for companionship (Jonah Hill was actually Tarantino's first choice for the role), but his promotional duties on behalf of THE DICTATOR knocked him out of the film. It's a small role that helps set up the film's antagonist, plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio). It would be disappointing to lose that part of the script, but, if need be, it could be cut.

You'll recall that there was last-second recasting during the shoot of INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, so this is definitely not cause for panic. It just so happens that he's got a huge cast, and a lot of name actors who'd kill to be in his film - and with a fixed December 25th release date, Tarantino simply doesn't have time to wait for actors' schedules to clear up. Aside from these minor snags, it sounds like DJANGO UNCHAINED is coming along beautifully.
Kurt Russell is one of my all time faves and he is known to be 'complicated'. I am going to keep following this because with personalities like him and QT there has to be a good story here. I have no problem with Walton(shoulda won a few emmys by now) Goggins picking up the slack.

    DJANGO UNCHAINED Footage Reactions

...Cannes Film Festival were treated to something a bit more special. The Weinstein Company offered an extended look at The Master, Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained and David O. Russell’s The Silver Linings Playbook a few hours ago.

While us common folk have to wait a while to see anything from the aforementioned titles, we’ve compiled a round-up of reactions to the footage from Tarantino’s latest for those interested to see how the pic is shaping up. Hit the jump for more.

The most rapturous response (unexpectedly) came from Django Unchained. The Weinstein Company showed off seven minutes of footage, and we’ll kick things off with some Twitter reactions:

    Drew McWheeny, Hitfix:

“OMFG, ‘Django Unchained’ looks so good. SO GOOD. #Cannes”

    Raffi Asdourian, The Film Stage:

“‘Django Unchained’ looks f’n badass… 7 minute trailer ending with Jamie Foxx shooting his pistol to James Brown ‘Payback’ ‘The D is Silent’”

    Twitch:

“‘Django’ gets the most whoops. Plenty of blood, plenty of laughs. Looks like it will be the Cristophe Waltz show. ‘The D is silent.’ #Cannes”

Now we’ll get to some more elaborate descriptions of the footage. First up, here’s what the folks at Vulture had to say:

“The big surprise? How funny this potentially controversial Western has turned out to be. In particular, Leonardo DiCaprio seems to be having the time of his life dropping N-bombs and smiling rotted teeth as plantation owner Calvin Candie… You’ll get a periwinkle-suited Foxx shooting lumpy blood chunks out of racist hicks (and an innocent snowman in one scene), and you’ll laugh! You’ll get Don Johnson dressed as Colonel Sanders!”

Here’s Quint from Ain’t it Cool News’ reaction:

Much like Inglourious Basterds before it, I painted a different picture in my mind, in this case a sweaty southern gothic story. But once Christoph Waltz shows up in his carriage with a giant tooth bouncing back and forth from the roof trying to negotiate a deal with a slave driver I began to get the tone… All the location work makes the film look huge, Foxx is at the top of his game it appears, Waltz is loveable, funny and dangerous all at once and it just feels like everybody is having a blast.

And finally, here’s an excerpt from Anne Thompson’s write-up:

“What the footage reveals is that for the moment, while Tarantino has described the film as a “southern,” Weinstein Co. is selling this as a bang-up western, packed with physical comedy and bloody action and hell-bent revenge. And yes, it looks like a classic widescreen Sergio Leone western, even if the setting is New Orleans and Mississippi two years before the Civil War. (The music on the trailer ranged from classic Johnny Cash to James Brown. No Ennio Morricone here. As yet.)”

All in all, this sounds very, very promising; especially given that Tarantino still has a great deal of the movie left to shoot. Hopefully we see a teaser trailer relatively soon so we too can marvel at the promise of a new film from Quentin Tarantino.
    OOOh I wanna see!!!!!

    DJANGO UNCHAINED Trailer Preview

OOOh didn't realize that M.C. Gainey(Swamp Thing from Con Air and countless other stuff) was in this too. Looks like fun, but Tom Hanks did Colonel Sanders better in LadyKillers, sorry Leo.

By the way...we have just crossed a line In a World Where...we preview trailers.

Jamie Foxx looks badass. Also, I've yet to see a film with Leo as the bad guy. God I can't wait for this to come out.
