Jeff Bridges Still Attempting to Produce and Star in Adaptation of Lois Lowry’s THE GIVER

Back in 2006, Jeff Bridges and producer Nikki Silver (full disclosure: I briefly worked for Silver in 2005 as a summer intern for her On-Screen Entertainment, but I’m 99% sure she doesn’t remember me at all) came close to adapting Lois Lowry’s Newberry Award-winning young adult novel The Giver. Fox and Walden Media considered giving a greenlight with House of Sand and Fog director Vadim Perlman at the helm, but in 2007, the rights went over to Warner Bros and the project stalled. Variety reports that Bridges and Silver have now reclaimed the screen rights and are now attempting to revive the film with Perlman still set to direct.

The book concerns a utopian society where all memories of the past reside with a sage figure known as “The Giver”. When a 12-year-old boy is selected to be the new Giver, he learns of the hypocrisies and hidden truths of his world. Bridges originally envisioned that his father Lloyd Bridges would play The Giver, but Lloyd died in 1998 and Bridges now says he feels old enough to play the role himself. Hit the jump for the novel’s official synopsis.

Here’s the synopsis for Lois Lowry’s The Giver:

Jonas’s world is perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear of pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the community. When Jonas turns 12 he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Now, it is time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back.

Hurm...tough to pin down, genre wise...but here it sits

Warner Bros. Wants Johnny Depp for CARTER BEATS THE DEVIL

An adaptation of the Glen David Gold novel Carter Beats the Devil has stagnated in development at Warner Bros. since it was published in 2002. 24 Frames hears the studio is ready to revive the project. Johnny Depp tops the wishlist to star as Charles Carter (aka Carter the Great), a master illusionist in the 1920s: “[Carter] stages a sawed-in-half trick on President Warren G. Harding, only to be forced on the lam after Harding mysteriously dies shortly after.” The plot features other historical figures, including Harry Houdini, BMW founder Max Friz, and television pioneer Philo Farnsworth.

Depp isn’t locked in, but Carter sounds like a character that would intrigue the idiosyncratic actor. A Warner Bros. spokesperson declined to comment, but word on the street says a new draft of the script was just turned in, and the studio is reaching out to agencies to find a director. Read the book synopsis after the jump.

America in the 1920s was a nation obsessed with magic. Not just the kind performed in theaters and on stages across the country, but the magic of technology, science, and prosperity. Enter Charles Carter — a.k.a. Carter the Great — a young master performer whose skill as an illusionist exceeds even that of the great Houdini. Fueled by a passion for magic that grew out of desperation and loneliness, Carter has become a legend in his own time. His thrilling act involves outrageous stunts carried out on elaborate sets before the most demanding audiences.

But the most outrageous stunt of all stars none other than President Warren Harding and ends up nearly costing Carter the reputation he worked so hard to create. Filled with historical references that evoke the excesses and enthusiasm of postwar, pre-Depression America, Carter Beats the Devil is the complex and illuminating story of one man’s journey through a magical — and sometimes dangerous — world, where illusion is everything, and everything is illusory.

Disney Planning Movie Based on Matterhorn Ride

Heat Vision reports that the film, which has a working title of The Hill, will be a “thrilling, fast-paced movie” that tells the story of five kids who are mysteriously called to the top of a mountain where they encounter Yetis. If the “mysterious calling” that brings them to the mountain is brainwashing and/or cult-like visions, I’m totally sold. The Hill is one of a number of Disney ride-themed films in development including Guillermo del Toro’s The Haunted Mansion***, Jon Favreau’s Magic Kingdom and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea which David Fincher is eyeing to direct.
*** First mention of this in a while...maybe it's not dead yet.
