Director says Men in Black 3 is either 'genius' or 'really stupid' | Blastr

Candor can be wonderful—especially from creators and stars who've literally been paid to say their film/TV show/whatever is the greatest thing ever. But that honesty usually comes in hindsight.

The fact that director Barry Sonnenfeld and makeup artist Rick Baker are slagging on Men in Black 3's production now is rather strange indeed.

Getting the Men in Black band back together for a sequel seems like a good idea, and adding Josh Brolin to the Will Smith-Tommy Lee Jones cocktail was a master stroke. But Sonnenfeld admitted to Empire magazine that, maybe, rushing into MIB3 might not have been the smartest movie:

"We knew starting the movie that we didn't have a finished second or third act. Was it responsible? The answer is, if this movie does as well as I think it will, it was genius. If it's a total failure, then it was a really stupid idea."

And Rick Baker—who's been making movies for 40 years and has the Oscars to prove it—was flabbergasted at the way things were going:

"It was a crazy production. We had a writer actually on the soundstage writing the words moments before the guys had to say them. I don't think that's any way to make a movie. But I've seen a rough cut and I was actually shocked at how good it was."

As always, the proof is in the pudding, and we'll find out on May 25 whether Sonnenfeld's decision was inspired or madness.
b.t.w. The teaser reel I saw for Baker's fx at last years SDCC, where he basically re-imagined(god that word sucks) old 1950 sci-fi archetypes(including the gorilla with a television for a head) were pretty damned kickass. And he has kinda SPOILED...

that TLJ is more than likely going to be 'replaced' by younger K for future sequels. My biggest complaint is that they apparently wrote Rip Torn(greatest name ever) out of the movie.

I dunno...maybe because of the RDJ/'this IS my house' binge episode. But yeah. His absence will be disappointing.

MEN IN BLACK 3 Movie Trailer

Looks fun. I remember being horribly disappointed in #2 but after watching it a few million times i like it. Brolin seems to have become Tommy Lee Jones.

Well I have bad news...and worse news.

Brett Ratner in Talks to Direct MIDNIGHT RUN 2

Midnight Run is about to get Ratner-fied. Development on a sequel to the 1988 buddy action-comedy began in early 2010 when word came that Universal was working on a follow-up with star Robert De Niro attached to reprise his bounty hunter role from the original. Now comes word that Mr. Brett Ratner is in talks to direct the sequel and screenwriters David Elliot and Paul Lovett (G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra) have been tapped to perform a rewrite. For those unfamiliar, the first film starred De Niro as a bounty hunter tasked with escorting an embezzler (Charles Grodin) across the country. Hit the jump for more on Midnight Run 2.

News of Ratner’s involvement with Midnight Run 2 comes courtesy of Deadline. As the man behind the Rush Hour franchise, Ratner certainly has experience with buddy comedies (albeit not good ones). He recently helmed the below-average comedy Tower Heist, and I’m not exactly hopeful that he’ll turn out a fun and exciting Midnight Run sequel. The involvement of Elliot and Lovett doesn’t raise my enthusiasm either; in addition to G.I. Joe they also wrote Four Brothers. The previous draft of the sequel was written by Timothy Dowling (Role Models, Knight and Day), and last we heard the story would involve teaming De Niro up with a “younger comedic foil.” That “old, curmudgeon cop/young, hip cop” dynamic is probably comedic gold to Ratner, but depending on whom they cast opposite De Niro we could be in for an incredibly boring ride.
