Default All Things South Park Thread

First off, its a shame when Steven effing Spielberg has a thread but the new South Park does not. Thats all I have to say about that.

As for SP, I am enjoying it. I liked Sarcastiball simply because Randy Marsh can get the most out of any episode. This was maybe his best since the medical marijuana/cancer episode.

Last nights was good but not great. South Parks ability to use satire and current events is brilliant and I wonder how many people actually got the joke at the end about "I cant help think that we were somehow to blame for lowering the bar." The James Cameron was funny as well....if not an homage to the absurdist humor of Monty Python, you could tell that certainly had to have gone through their minds at some point. Very funny. Not Gold....but better than 99.9% of the other crap on TV.

Sidenote, missed the new Tosh cartoon.....any reviews?

    South Park - Season 16

We kinda just carried on the coversation here. After the cullings of the past we have been trying to keep things more organized. We could always have a mod change this to the all things:South Park thread and have done with it. They are on season 17 so starting a new thread everytime...

Brickleberry is kinda juvenile. Not terribly funny.

My bad....this is the second half. Thanks for the quick brickleberry review.

When South Park ends I hope they can pass the baton and continue with the Randy Marsh show.

No harm no foul. I thought it was a new season too. I wanted to like Brickleberry...and granted I only saw the first episode, but, some backstory here, Roger(yucko the clown from the Stern show) and his partner submitted this to Fox years ago and it was passed on, Tosh just stepped in and produced it. It plays like something that was sitting around for a few years and was just dusted off and not really developed. Lesbian park ranger jokes are about the extent of it. I will watch a few more eps but I don't expect much to change. And pretty much the only funny part of last night's episode(SP) was the Cameron stuff. Both episodes have just seemed really phoned in so far. I don't blame the guys for being burnt out at this point...wait a minute, actually there was ONE really cool moment where Stan & Kyle were kind of breaking the fourth wall and saying 'maybe we lowered the bar...'. That to me says all you need to know about how the boys are kind of going thru the motions. They don't seem to really have the anger they once had and it's all spinning wheels. If they start deconstructing their own show...well we might have something.

Gotta disagree with ya JD....thought both were good but not great. Still better them much of the crap on tv. Will agree with you....the last couple of seasons we have seen a lot more introspection and self deprecation...and Im ok with that. Seth McFarland could probably stand to do a bit more of that.

I didn't get the self deprecation of themselves with the lowering if the bar. That's interesting. I just saw it as a slight to society as a whole that people actually watch honey boo boo type shows....on the "learning channel"

Well that and James Cameron does what James Cameron does because he is James Cameron.

Yeah. I know. I seem to be alone in thinking South Park is spinning wheels. And yeah...it's still probably better than a lot of stuff, but I can only judge it against itself. And I just think that the boys are running out of things to rail against and now are obliged to still create episodes. The best 'Parks are the ones that are hyper focused and really have a point to make. A lot of the more recent ones just don't have the same courage of conviction. They seem labored and echos of past glories. I have no argument about Family Guy. He(MacFarlane) has publicly said if he had his druthers it would be done by now. And it shows. But...it's a cash cow. And it allows him to make other things he has more passion for. I just think it's the same with South Park. I almost wish they could go on hiatus for a year or 2...and come back with a ton of things to actually WANT to say instead of HAVING to say.

Does that mean MacFarlane actually has passion for American Dad and The Cleveland Show, because I always thought that those were where the jokes that weren't good enough even for Family Guy went.

Anyways, Sarcastiball episode was weak, beating the same joke over and over again with a heavy dose of "look how tastelessly edgy we are!" The one last week was much better, with a wider range. The best South Park episode actually always seem to be the ones where Parker and Stone are not trying to make a point or play off some current event. The first season is pure gold and it was just the characters being the characters. The best episodes in recent memory are the ones with The Coon, and that was just kids playing superhero.
