Stanley Kubrick’s Lost Debut Feature Fear And Desire To Play On TCM This December Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movies and TV News and Rumors

Fear and Desire was the debut feature of Stanley Kubrick, made in his mid twenties, and pretty much lost by this thirtieth birthday. During his lifetime, Stanley frowned on requests for the film to be played at festivals or retrospectives and it was 1993 before it met a good size audience, with a screening at the Telluride Film Festival.

And now, in just a couple of weeks, the film is going to get its worldwide TV premiere, courtesy of TCM.
Awesome. Too bad TCM isn't in high-def for me.

Since Kubrick’s death the film has played more frequently, and I’ve often been offered a DVD of it from here or there – the film is long since in the public domain and anybody who can get their hands on the material can make and sell copies.

But what’s important about the screening on TCM is that we’ll be seeing an archive print from George Eastman House, well preserved, expected to be in good quality and transferred for TV playback to a high standard.
Awesome. TOO BAD TCM ISN'T IN HIGH DEF FOR ME.

Now, it’s not just Kubrick coming out of the vaults as Fear and Desire will be screening as part of a marathon that will also include:

Huckleberry Finn (1920), Roaring Rails (1924), Goldstein (1965, pictured), A Page of Madness (1926) and Delicious (1931). Also showing is the Ava Gardner-James Mason film Pandora and the Flying Dutchman (1951) in a Technicolor restoration that was co-presented by the Eastman House.

Dunno, since some of these are old and not exactly the most expensive movies to have been, the high def thing shouldn't be too much of an issue this time around. :P

Seriously, A Page of Madness FTW! What a weird twisted movie! :O

It's too late, Orph. High-def will now always be important to me. I still watch stuff on TCM, but the fuzzy screen bugs the **** out of me!

Ok, I'll have to make sure and watch that one.

‘Room 237′ Explores Fantastic Theories Behind Stanley Kubrick’s ‘The Shining’ [Sundance 2012] | /Film

Several of the other chapters dissect the production design and mise en scene of the film in excruciating detail. For example, one woman has made detailed maps of the Overlook and decided it couldn’t be a real structure. Another believes Kubrick was so obsessed with subliminal advertising at the time, he flooded the movie with sexual images. And yet another believes Kubrick composed the film to be a mirror unto itself and, to illustrate, we watch several scenes from The Shining overlapped from two different sources: One running the film forward, the other running it backward. The results are jaw-dropping.

Through all of this, the film’s main message shines through. Whether or not Kubrick meant the film to do any of these things, there are definite arguments to be made. Art isn’t always up to the artist. A fan’s obsession can come into play too.

Room 237 is a must watch for any fan of film, especially Stanley Kubrick and particularly for those who love The Shining. It places itself among the elite documentaries made on the mysterious auteur. Hopefully any obstacles that need to be overcome in order to secure a release will be, and audiences will get a chance to see this phenomenal work.
