Maniacal Laugh, Maniacal Laugh, Maniacal Laugh
Steven Soderbergh Directing 2nd Unit For Gary Ross on ‘The Hunger Games’ | /Film
This just got more interesting.
Sigh..having read the books up to Catching Fire (and subsequently abandoning the series altogether out of disgust) I regret ever being excited for these movies. Don't let the potential carnage and mayhem distract you, the Hunger Games series is nothing but Twilight drivel in different wrapping paper. Can't a girl be bad ass and kill people in peace without having to worry about some stupid, unrealistic love triangle? Apparently not. When she's not in the arena trying not to die she doesn't even know what to ****ing do with herself. Since when is being an indecisive, self-pitiying **** tease considered as being a "strong and independent woman" ?
I know, and that's why **** like Twilight and HG piss me off so much. Everyone always tells me "You don't like _____ because she's not like you." Damn straight she's not like me. But I don't think a girl like me is such a rarity in society and if writers are going to try to tote positive images of females in their work, they need to do that **** right. Because heaven forbid a strong and independent woman doesn't need to have a love interest thrown in the mix or love triangles.
Look, I am sure Outfest has a lot of movies featuring characters like that, not implying you need to be gay...just trying to say that any author/filmmaker who is trying to be successful(make money) is going to appeal to the tried and true formula because that is what sells. You want great female role models you are probably going to have to look in more indy/art film neighborhoods. Ok, let me ask a question...Alice Doesn't live here anymore...The Burning Bed...etc in other words movies where women have made bad choices but have finally said ENOUGH...I get the feeling, like Rose Red from Fables, you have no respect for female characters who made bad life choices, but were STRONG enough to rise over them. That's harsh and unforgiving. Ok, so you can make a movie. You start with a strong independant woman who needs NO MAN and has never made bad choices...where will you go from there? It's b-o-r-i-n-g. I get it...you are tired of the damsel in distress, but all good characters have some dirt on their knees and elbows. You are too inflexible when it comes to a character having FLAWS. Guess what, everyone ****s up. It's life. I am with you in railing against **** like Coyote Ugly and other...'duh, I am a cute girl and in love with too many people' drivel, but you expect too much. What are the rare examples of famous cinematic characters that pass the test? Give us a baseline please...
Norma Bates was a strong woman. She didn't take any **** from no one even after she died. Well, except from that fly that she refused to swat, but she wanted to make a point. :D
First of all, Rose Red was a blatant bitch and a raging WHORE. She didn't make bad choices, that's just her character. And she did it REPEATEDLY. It's no wonder that Boy Blue used some of his last minutes to basically tell her to go **** off. Harsh and unforgiving? Well that's too ****ing bad. What about the rest of us who did things right? No one praises us for our day to day accomplishments. You might think it's boring about a strong and independent woman that never made by choices, but hey, that's practically my life. I don't think it's boring at all. You know what's ****ing boring? All those damn machismo movies with Jason Statham and crap like the Expendables. But who cares right? Because all you men think it's cool and well, that's the way guys are.
And I don't expect too much at all. There is nothing wrong with expecting better of the way women are portrayed in media. And I don't care if it ever changes I am going to keep on speaking out about it anyway, at least someone does in this forum.....
You want a baseline? What about Elizabeth Bennet? Sure she made a mistake by thinking Mr. Darcy was something he was not (under the false information by Mr. Wickham) but she was her own woman the whole time and didn't take **** from anyone regardless of money and stature? What about the main characters from Easy A, Sydney White, and Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist? And Michele Reis character from Fallen Angels (the only WKW movie I can actually stand)? What about Catwoman from Batman Returns? Or Michelle Yeo's character in Die Another Day or Wing Chun? Viola from Twelth Night? There's the women in the Joy Luck Club too, both Chocolate and Chocolat....I think I could find out more if I really did my research.
A lot of these movies aren't artsy or independent. And I don't think movies with these characters have to be shoved into this category or seen primarily at movie festivals like Outfest.
Well, I will have to take your word for it because I have seen absolutely NONE of those movies. I wasn't trying to stir the hornets nest or imply that people who live a life of virtue are boring(apologies)...just that movies about them tend to be. For me at least, I need an arc where a character redeems themselves. That's what I identify with, read into that what you may. Ok, here is a question...how do you feel about the story arc of Sir Lancelot(choose whatever movie/book you want to illustrate). He lived a life of virtue, complete dedication...yet he lost all because for just a brief moment he allowed himself to love and NOT DENY his wants? Is he a bad person and not worthy becaue of that one moment? Is Guinevere a horrible person because she tempted him. Or are they both tragic figures?
