It's not really that, I mean all of us, maybe, are getting old, and I am far from that whole music isn't as good as it used be state of mind. It's just that following, listening, and discovering new music takes effort and time, and well, sometimes it's easy not to set time aside for such. :/
haha, i'm pretty sure most of us are older than you, orph.
it's ok. we all go through phases where we stop listening to new music. or at least i do. i stopped for a bit until this year and i kind of got caught up in it again when i started buying records again. i must've bought about 100 (old and new, singles and albums) this year alone. i don't spend as much time on the computer so i haven't been so great with listening to mp3s (and therefore i have that mini list of "stuff i've heard is fantastic but that i need to give a listen to before i buy the record"), but oh man it is way too easy to drop $$$ on various orders and ebay for vinyl and fall into a rabbit hole of acquiring more music than i meant to.

i'm sure you'll fall back onto the wagon eventually.

Lots of great stuff here that I didn't put on my list but I probably should.

Especially Yob (**** **** **** just how good can you get, once again Kelly's and Scheidt's vocals are killing me), Loss, Tombs and Mournful Congregation (The Waterless Streams is probably my favorite 2011 song).

I don't understand the thing people have with Altar of Plagues though. I find them quite boring.

Even though i put the AoP album on my best of list i still think its a bit of a regression from their previous effort. I can see how they would be boring though since its very repetitive stuff. Mournful Congregation were ****ing amazing live! Doom Metal doesn't always have a strong live component but when 3 guitarists are layering and switching leads off live it makes for a great performance. Even with 3 guitarists i think they said they are still short of how many they use on their recordings which just goes to show how rich their song composition truly is.

@ Orpheus: you can get back into the swing of things starting by going on youtube and checking out tracks from albums people post on their best of lists

same here. i actually got into my most favorite band by seeing them open for AFI. that was about 10+ years ago though. at some point, i got (old and) more picky about which opening bands to show up for. i really would've loved to have been able to check out the entire show i went to in november though. la dispute, o'brother and moving mountains opened up for thrice and i've heard so many good things about all 3 openers. i just couldn't show up until the headliner (almost 10pm) because i got held up with my kid that night. oh well. as kingovallkings points out, there's always youtube.......

My favorite way to find new music is music blogs. Google a band you like, find a blog that has stuff of theirs on it and then see what else is posted there.

Alternatively, you can ask certain people for recommendations.

Just about anytime something sounds interesting, I download it.

Like lunchie, I discover a lot of bands nowadays with my record buying. I follow smaller labels, if they release something I like, chances are they'll release similar stuff with up and coming bands.
