successfully treating the symptoms of the disease over the span of time does not mean a cure... drug abuse is merely a symptom

Cocaine is gods way of saying you make too much money.
But seriously.....i personally know several people here on LGK who had some pretty serious issues they overcame in terms of drugs/alcohol. Based on recent events here its really hard for me to say Amy Winehouse had a disease or even a health issue. This isnt being ignorant...its comparing things and events that happen to people and concluding person A was dealt a bad hand and person B made a series of bad choices. Once again I can state personally that I had issues back in the day that I realized were negative and weighing the pros/cons and doing some self analysis decided it was without question in my best interest to step away from partaking in those activities. I can also say once again-I personally know people on LGK who probably had some far bigger issues then I had who took the same steps I took to resolve the issue.

And yes I do realize that substance dependance is like OCD in terms of disorders
neither... dependence on a substance is not addiction
nearly 100% of the time, drugs are used without regard for ANY sort of consequence.
it's isn't like OCD, it is the same root cause of OCD.
not every drug user is an addict, and not every addict uses drugs.

Okay...so please do inform me then Ges.
(not AT ALL saying or meaning that with a smart ass attitude, just want insight)
simply put, it's a brain chemistry thing... hormones, glands, that sort of stuff... i ain't a doctor.
as per the American Society of Addiction Medicine
notice how it says - "addiction is a primary..." the substance abuse part is secondary... and THAT part CAN be kicked.Addiction is a primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory and related circuitry. Dysfunction in these circuits leads to characteristic biological, psychological, social and spiritual manifestations. This is reflected in the individual pursuing reward and/or relief by substance use and other behaviors. The addiction is characterized by impairment in behavioral control, craving, inability to consistently abstain, and diminished recognition of significant problems with one’s behaviors and interpersonal relationships. Like other chronic diseases, addiction can involve cycles of relapse and remission. Without treatment or engagement in recovery activities, addiction is progressive and can result in disability or premature death.
and... "chronic" generally (though not always) denotes the "incurable." Cancer and HIV are examples of chronic diseases.
why can some people eat whatever the f*** they want and have great cholesterol or never get fat, yet there are some hard artery having obese motherf***ers?
