12 Observations On What Worked & What Didn't In The New Netflix Season Of

Complex, layered and dense? Yes, but not necessarily always funny. You might be frustrated, but stay the course, before you abandon “Arrested Development.” The show begins to get better later in the game when the convoluted storylines start to come together and sometimes in a way that's shockingly brilliant and pretty funny. That said, overall, this new season is really uneven and the producers make the fundamental error of confusing dense, layered and complex for deepness, comedy and a satisfying experience. The intricacies of the show could turn off a lot of people because of instead of laughing they're going have no clue what's going on.

The show emphasizes it's interconnectedness over humor to a fault, essentially obsessed with the way it all connects, the bigger picture, without focusing on the here and now. Also the setup is fundamentally flawed -- there’s little of the group dynamic that made the show so beloved, and the cutting to A, B, C, & D storylines is now no longer achieved within one episode, but takes place often several episodes down the road, and by then may have lost its impact. The new direction, while again, highly ambitious is nowhere near as tight and punchy, and its ending is far from satisfying.

Has “Arrested Development” lost its touch? Maybe not exactly, but it’s sure missed a step. We suspect, Hurwitz and co. will want to attempt a post mortem rethink about the future of the series. [C+]
Long read, but a good critique.

Sounds like a lot of justification for what is essentially a case of you can't go home again.

The 4th Season of ‘Arrested Development’ Delivers With Comedy and Narrative Complexity | /Film

I don't watch this but it really seems like there is almost an Emperors New Clothes like spin going on here...

Keeping with the tone of the series, nothing about this fourth season is traditional. There’s a new structure, a new delivery system and a new spin on comedy. The jokes are sharp as always, but as the season unfolds the idea of consistent laughs becomes less important. The true pleasure in this latest season of Arrested Development is letting the labyrinthian narrative unspool in surprising ways. In comedy, it’s rare to be this hypnotized by a story.
C'mon...really. So the show has metamorphosed into a brand new form of comedy where laughs aren't important? So that means that all this time I hated Jenny McCarthy was she actually creating a higher artform by just opening her mouth and going all HeeHaw style? Couldn't it just be that they laid an egg?

The criticism is valid, but it still was funny. Just not as consistently funny as the previous seasons.

And I think repeated viewings will probably improve it still.

More importantly, why don't you watch Arrested Development?!

I quite enjoyed episode 4, but it was a bit rough leading up to that episode. I've pretty much accepted it's not gonna be as good as it was. That trailer was spectacular though.

Not really my cuppa tea. Not a fan of David Cross or the guy that was married to Amy Poehler...and, not proud of this, I think all the praise pretty much turned me off to it. I am not making statements in the above comment...not fit to judge because I DON'T watch. But all the different ways that critics are finding to say there isn't an air of disappointment wafting thru the room just rings a little false. I really just asked the questions to see what you folks who like the show were really thinking.

I'm 10 episodes in, and probably need to re-watch #2-#5, as I was in "distract mode" during some of it. I agree wholeheartedly on the unevenness of the episodes overall, but accept the known limitations that the show was going to be put in constraint-wise (ie - actors' scheduling, budget, meeting fans/critics expectations - not to mention the overwhelming hype). Having said that, I'm tickled pink with it. There is little doubt that this is the same Arrested Development we were all used to - just slightly......different. Yes, a few of the cameos were less than stellar so far (as I said, I'm only 10 episodes in), but come on, I always thought Martin Short was a funny guy, but he was AWFUL when he was on AD for his one episode.

It's true that the story unfolds in a very bizarre manner, and you don't get your usual sense of satisfaction from plot closure in 20-30 minute increments, but rather over long, drawn out segments instead. It's bizarre, because you sense both a deliberate purpose in the direction this was put together - and at the same time can feel them letting the wind hit the sails and see where it takes them. Also, no matter how prepared I was to know that there were green-screens used in a few of the episodes, I was surprised at how blatantly obvious a few of them were, and it did indeed spoil the chemistry of the scene to know that.

I'm VERY careful NOT to give away ANY spoilers here, but have to say that, just from an INDIVIDUAL standpoint so far (10 eps in, we've seen way too little of Buster, imho), the head and shoulders' best performance turned in HAS to be David Cross. Tobias has ALWAYS been a funny character, but there are moments of sheer brilliance here from David Cross. What makes his performance so outstanding, is that he is spot-on no matter what style of comedy his character is put into: slapstick, satire, tongue-in-cheek, improv, etc. No matter the situation, no matter how convaluted the direction of the script, Cross makes every one of his scenes be absolutely outstanding!

More ‘Arrested Development’ Seasons On the Way? Netflix CEO Says Maybe | Variety

Netflix would be happy to bring back “Arrested Development” for additional seasons, if the actors involved in the quirky comedy cult hit were interested, CEO Reed Hastings said.

The show is “unique because it’s up to the talent” about whether it returns for an additional run, Hastings said in an interview Wednesday with CNBC.

Here's all I need to know about it....

I've watched 4 episodes... I have nothing to do tonight.... and I'm not even the slightest bit curious to see what episode 5 is like.

I'll get around to watching the rest of them.... but I really don't care.

    Apathy.

Finished all 15 episodes, and all I can say is.....love it.

I am probably an apologist in the sense that, I rarely think this show can do anything wrong, but am willing to call them out on episodes that aren't up to par from time to time. I think I understand the criticisms leveled by the people who didn't enjoy the season and all, but I just simply disagree. The thing is, this was done deliberately to satiate the people who want to find the joy and humor in this show for repeated viewings. And once you've seen all 15 episodes in their entirety and can then take a step back, you'll begin to see how it all intertwines beautifully.

Yes there are a few missteps here and there, and even a few loopholes never closed or resolved; but once you've seen all 15, you'll begin to see that, they clearly have left this where it's at in hopes of a continuance.
