I'm not a fan of Metallica after AJFA... just my opinion. The "Black" album has one good song- "Holier Than Thou." Other albums have a few good songs. They tried to mix it up, I guess. Can't blame them... Bands get bored doing the same thing over n over. Do I consider them a "sell out?" Ummm no, I just don't like the direction they went.

Remember, this is all my opinion...I think The Beatles are over rated, I think The Rolling Stones shoulda hung it up after "Some Girls" and I've never really liked U2.

When I think of a sellout band, TSOL comes to mind. (Or at least the name-TSOL) They went from being a great punk band and slowly changed into a metal band! Huh? Pantera also comes to mind, they went from a glam band and became hardcore. Ick. Now, I doubt TSOL had all the original members throughout their transition, in fact I know Jack left the band. But Pantera is just utter crap to me. THAT'S a sellout in my opinion.

One more thing, I'm sure some hippies would think that Bob Dylan sold out when he went electric...but that was a lifetime ago, is he still alive?

The scariest part of the metallica progression vs sellout thing, I listened to load for the first time in probably 10 years a few weeks ago. Now that there's an emotional detachment for me I actually enjoyed the album instead of wishing it was something it wasn't.

    Some sellouts for me:

    The Cult
    U2
    Green Day
Goo Goo Dolls (not that it matters)

I would say any singer/musician who goes on TV to judge a so called reality talent show/competition. (Yes, that includes Steve Tyler).

I still listen to Answer that and Stay Fashionable and laugh. I don't know if I'd call it progression, but if they want to mold or show a new sound, change, whatever, more power to em. and best of luck in the future.

Wow, not sure I've ever heard anyone claim Pantera was a sell out. Granted, I don't know a whole lot of their history. I know Cowboys from Hell is awesome, though.

If you view their more recent stuff as a hard rock album instead of a metal album, I think it's easier to get over. I think most people refuse to judge albums after AJFA on their own merits.

In both cases, to each his own.

Couldnt agree more....DSOTM is far better than Ummugumma. As a matter of fact most of the early Floyd records are worthy for historic reasons but not so much the quality of their music sans Meddle. And trust me, Im a huge fan but there are some songs on the early albums that are a waste of vinyl.
