Quick version:

When I was moderately obsessed with this show (X-Files), I also became fascinated with paranormal/weird/myth type things. I subscribed to that Time Life series of books on the stuff, I read books about the Loch Ness Monster, I watched that show Sightings religiously (especially since it came on right after X-Files), etc.

One of the myth-type things I read about was the Tunguska Event, which was basically a giant explosion over a part of Russia in 1908. You can read up at the Wikipedia link if you so desire, but the local people at the time of the event had attributed the event to a surprise visit by the fire-god Adgy.

This particular phenomenon got special attention from me because it's referenced in Ghostbusters.

And I was just nerdy enough to think that some super obscure deity deemed responsible for a weird, paranormal event by some yokels would make a cool internet handle.

And now you know the story.
