Matthew Vaughn Acquires Movie Rights To Mark Millar

This is something that ended up in today’s Superhero Bits, but it is really big enough to warrant its own headline. So for those who didn’t see SHB today, Matthew Vaughn, the director of the film based on Mark Millar‘s comic Kick-Ass and other films such as X-Men: First Class, has picked up the rights to create a film based on Millar’s comic Superior. The comic is about a young boy living with multiple sclerosis who is given the opportunity to transform into his idol, a superhero from the big screen.
Superior: good, but not great. Might make a good movie, though.

Joel Schumacher Says He Wanted Nicolas Cage To Play Scarecrow In The Aborted ‘Batman Triumphant’ > The Playlist

While many cite disastrous blockbuster “Batman And Robin” as the nadir of Schumacher’s career, they ignore the fact that Warner Bros. was actually pretty high on Joel upon seeing the dailies for that picture, and had begun work on a followup, the Mark Protosevich-drafted “Batman Triumphant.” That picture was to showcase the Dynamic Duo battling the Scarecrow, with the villain’s “fear toxins” forcing Batman to see his former enemies, including the Joker, in a return performance by the still-under-contract Jack Nicholson. We recently chatted with Schumacher and he revealed he had a clear idea of who he wanted to play Scarecrow in the ultimately aborted sequel.

“I was supposed to do a fifth one,” Schumacher says. “I was talking to Nic Cage about playing the Scarecrow. I had begged the studio for [the Frank Miller comic] ‘The Dark Knight [Returns],’ but they wanted a family friendly, toyetic thing.”

You kidding me? That sounds so perfectly high concept. Simple idea will make a great emptyheaded feel-good flick. Get Walt Jr from Breaking Bad and latherrinserepeat. I liked WANTED but Millar's original comic was so much better. They strip mined the idea and made an entertaining flick. Expect more of the same, Millar's work seems to be perfect for translation.

Robert Zemeckis to Produce Comic Adaptation CHARLES FORT

The name Charles Fort may not be familiar to many, so perhaps H.P. Lovecraft will ring a few more bells. Some of Lovecraft’s works were influenced by the scientific work of American writer and paranormal researcher Charles Fort in the early 20th century. Now, in an adaptation of the Dark Horse comic Fort: Prophet of the Unexplained, Robert Zemeckis will attempt to bring this relatively unknown character to the screen. Converting the comic will be Evan Spiliotopoulos, who has most recently worked on the script for Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman. If that hasn’t sold you yet, Charles Fort is being billed as a “period Ghostbusters.”

For more on Charles Fort, hit the jump.

Charles Fort, the man, was interested in “anomalous and unexplained phenomena.” He applied his scientific method to investigate events ranging from teleportation to poltergeists, levitation and UFOs. His novels, such as The Outcast Manufacturers (1909) and The Book of the Damned (1919) were well reviewed then and are still available today.

Fort’s real-life work inspired the more adventurous character in the 2002 Dark Horse comic mini-series off of which Charles Fort, the movie, is based. From the four-issue Dark Horse series by authors Peter Lenkov and Frazer Irving:

“Lo! A mighty prophet of the unexplained has come forward to search out the truth and light the way for mankind! It’s the end of the 19th century and the city of New York has been plagued by fish falling from the sky, strange lights in the night, bizarre collections of microbial goo, and vanishing citizens! It’s up to one man to expose the truth behind these events… Charles Fort! A mild mannered librarian by day, Fort seeks out the truth and exposes the bizarre to the light of day! [Amazon]

According to Heat Vision, Dark Horse’s Mike Richardson along with Jack Rapke and Steve Starkey from ImageMovers will produce with Zemeckis. Dark Horse Entertainment and Universal have another adaptation coming to theaters in summer of 2013 in the form of R.I.P.D., which was also written by Lenkov.

Barnes & Noble Pulls Watchmen, Sandman And 100 DC Graphic Novels From Their Shelves Over Amazon Kindle Fire Deal Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movies and TV News and Rumors

Last week, Bleeding Cool reported on DC Comics’ plans to release 100 graphic novels exclusively on the Amazon Kindle Fire.

Well now the other shoe has dropped. I understand that Barnes & Noble executives are furious over this, specifically citing DC’s reluctance to release any of their graphic novels on the Nook Color, Barnes & Noble’s own colour E-reading device.

They contacted DC to express their displeasure, but hit a brick wall. And as a result, they’ve gone for a scorched earth policy. An email sent to stores yesterday instructs them to remove all of the 100 graphic novels listed from the shelves, including Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns, Sandman, Fables, Blackest Night, All Star Superman, Y The Last Man, V For Vendetta, all strong sellers for the company. You will still be able to order the books on the website, but in bookstores you won’t even be able to special order a copy – unless you request it delievered to your home. Copies will not be allowed to enter Barnes & Noble premises.
    Not good news.

Conan By Brian Wood And Becky Cloonan Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movies and TV News and Rumors

Because, yes, Bleeding Cool understands that Brian Wood and Becky Cloonan are the new Conan creative team to be announced by Dark Horse at the New York Comic Con.
Nice. Just recently finished reading the first 4 trades of Wood's Northlanders and enjoyed it quite a bit.

Yeah, because stuff like this is going to help brick and mortar stores get stronger.
Only by living absurdly is it possible to break out of this infinite absurdity.
