WonderCon 2012: Hilton Anaheim Now Offering Rooms; More Convention Guests Announced

Lay, Snyder, Wheaton and Even More Guests Flock to WonderCon

WonderCon in Anaheim features increasingly stellar lineup

Anaheim, CA – WonderCon, part of Comic-Con International’s (CCI) family of nonprofit comics conventions, today announced the latest additions to a guest list that already has fans buying passes at an unprecedented pace for the three-day celebration of comics and related popular art forms. The additions include fan favorites cartoonist Carol Lay (WayLay, The Simpsons), award-winning writer Scott Snyder (Batman, American Vampire, Swamp Thing), and actor/author Wil Wheaton (Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Big Bang Theory). WonderCon will be held March 16-18, 2012.

Passes and hotel accommodations for WonderCon became available on WonderCon 2011 :: What's New in December. The event, traditionally held in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1987, relocated the Anaheim Convention Center for 2012 due to renovations at the usual venue. Organizers for the event are pleased to offer southern Californian fans a chance to attend WonderCon who otherwise may not have been able to make the trek to San Francisco. Fans from Orange County and the Los Angeles area have expressed delight in having an event akin to San Diego Comic-Con at their doorstep.

WonderCon’s format resembles the world-renowned Comic-Con albeit on a reduced scale. The 2011 WonderCon welcomed nearly 50,000 attendees, which is less than half of the 130,000 who attended the 2011 San Diego show.

Joining Lay, Snyder, and Wheaton among the newly announced special guests are Renae De Liz (artist/editor, Womanthology, The Last Unicorn), Rebekah Isaacs (artist, Angel & Faith, Magus), Todd Nauck (artist, Amazing Spider-Man, Young Justice), Humberto Ramos (artist, Amazing Spider-Man, Impulse, Crimson), and Ryan Sook (artist, The Spectre; cover artist, Justice League Dark, DCU Presents). For a complete list and bios of the previously announced special guests, who include award-winning comics writers and artists as well as novelists and screenwriters, visit WonderCon 2012 :: Special Guests.

“The guest list just keeps getting more impressive,” said David Glanzer, director of marketing and public relations for WonderCon and parent company, Comic-Con International. “That, along with rapid badge sales, indicates WonderCon will be just as exciting, if not more so, than the 2011 blockbuster show.”

I think I'm going to go to that. A pretty nice guest list and it's in driving distance.

Brand New Clip from Chronicle, Plus, First Photo! | Shock Till You Drop

Today, Shock Till You Drop was one of the few members of the press invited to the 20th Century Fox lot to get a sneak peek at Chronicle, the film from newcomer Joshua Trank, who puts a supremely dark spin on the "superpowers acquired" formula and tells his story using the "found footage" technique.

A complete write-up of the day's events, including some commentary from Trank himself, is forthcoming. What I will say is that the footage was incredibly impressive. Chronicle was shot on a low budget, however, Trank, along with writer Max Landis, aspired for something with scope as they tell their tale of three high schoolers who develop telekinesis and the one loner who abuses his newfound power.

The film dabbles in some Akira territory, no doubt about that, there are also shades of Zapped! in the sense that these teens use their powers for a bit of silly business. A sneak peek at what appeared to be a big showdown definitely had shades of the anime. But what was striking was the visual FX Trank pulled off using the money he had. I'll get into it a bit more later. For now, check out this new clip - that was passed along only to those outlets who attended the presentation today - and the first official still.
I posted on this a while back. It's a found footage flick about 3 guys who somehow acquire super powers and are not exactly prone to 'do-gooded-ness'. The advanced word is pretty strong and I have to say this is one of the movies I am looking forward to seeing in this new year...

AVX Versus, “The Least Essential Read Of AvX” – Tom Brevoort | Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movies and TV News and Rumors

It has been said that some superhero comics offer nothing but fight scenes.

It’s not meant to be a good thing.

Today, Marvel have announced a new comic, AVX: Versus, which will, according to Tom Brevoort through CBR, “expand the battles seen in the main pages of AvX“.

And that’s it. Two “stories” an issue, twelve issues, twice a month, fight, fight, fight, fight, fight!

AvX: Versus is the least essential read of AvX, but it will probably be the most bestselling. It is literally the fight book. – Tom Brevoort.

There has been criticism of certain X-Men and Avengers comics of late, that they do nothing but sit around a table talking. Something tells me that won’t be a criticism of this comic…
Jeez. I guess with the right artist, a comic fight book could be worthwhile, but...

Now Grant Morrison Gets HIS Own Convention | Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movies and TV News and Rumors

With the comic store Isotope and iFanboy’s money from Graphic.Ly, this autumn will see Morrisoncon come to… well, they aren’t saying, but with Isotope’s involvement, one might consider somewhere in and around San Francisco.

You can sign up at the website for what is described as a one time only, nine creator event. Kapow however is back for a second year and has a bunch more names. Including people off of the telly, and everything.
I am completely unashamed to say that I hope this is local so I can attend it.

'Annotated Sandman' gives insight into series

The author of The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes and The New Annotated Dracula adds historical and cultural references, creator commentary, hidden gems and other assorted notes to Gaiman's seminal Sandman series with The Annotated Sandman Vol. 1, out today from DC/Vertigo Comics.

Edited by Klinger, the tome includes the first 20 issues of Gaiman's 1989-96 fantasy series, with three more hardcover books to follow — one each this fall, next spring and next fall — that will collect all 75 issues.
Pre-ordered volume 1 already. Very much looking forward to reading it.

Sounds good...still $49 for black and white???? The beautiful purples and blacks were amazing, as much as I love seeing original inks. I need to reread those, I miss Kane & Abel(never better) and Merle Pumkinhead.

Those are going to be like comics versions of Norton's critical editions.

    And I have a cousin who's a pumpkinghead.
Only by living absurdly is it possible to break out of this infinite absurdity.
