I think the general consensus is to start with Joe Kelly's run, which is what made the character popular (amongst comic fans). So start with Deadpool Classic Vol. 2

Deadpool Classic, Vol. 2: Joe Kelly, Ed McGuinness, Kevin Lau, Pete Woods, Shannon Denton, John Fang, Aaron Lopresti, Bernard Chang: 9780785137313: Amazon.com: Books

I say start with Vol. 2 because Vol. 1 is mostly the Rob Leifeld stuff before he was funny. Unfortunately, the very first issue of Joe Kelly's run is in Vol. 1 (because otherwise everyone would skip it, probably), but you'll be fine starting with Vol. 2. I want to warn you that this isn't Watchmen. The book doesn't really hit it's stride until later, but from here you get some good fun and a couple laughs. It's a good starting point.

I want to say that the newly released Gail Simone book would be a better starting point, but I need to re-read it first. Hopefully, my shop has the copy I order when i go to pick my books up this week and I can let you know.

And Guardians look like it has something that is sadly lacking in these recent movies...a sense of real fun and bright colors and strange places...you know, like an actual comic book. They may both actually fail simply because they aren't as calculated for profit like Avengers 2, FF vs Xmen and Supes vs Batman vs everyone in the DC universe. If they are even total failures I respect Marvel for NOT playing it entirely safe.
I agree. I think stuff like Ant-Man and GotG may not have quite as much initial appeal, but the quality and word of mouth will hopefully do the rest of the work. Assuming these are as good as JD and I are assuming they will be.

Honestly, I think making movies like this, sort of... diversifying within the genre, is GOOD for the genre. Sticking with straight ahead superhero fare is more of a danger. Got to keep things fresh and I think these two directors are perfectly suited to make their films stand out in that way.

Ugh...Quicksilver looks like a male Dazzler. Why these movies are so afraid to give characters their signature identifying hairstyles is beyond me. May seem petty, but for some its as iconic as a costume.

I'm all for something new, but the giant entertainment conglomerate that writes the nine-figure checks to make the movies is not going to respect box office articles that reference John Carter Of Mars. Getting comic book readers to the theater is only going to bring in so much money, not enough to even pay for the opening action scene.

The whole Batman / Superman thing is completely stupid and certainly should not be used to introduce a new Batman, especially one played by Affleck. My current theory on the Affleck casting is that they are trying to get Christian Bale to wake up one day and realize "Holy ****, Affleck is going to crap all over everything I did!" and then call up the studio and demand his cowl back. Affleck should stick to directing realistic dramatic thrillers - he's somehow good at it.

See...and this is where I lose everyone, what exactly did Bale do? The wonderful Bat-voice? Not actually be in costume for more than 15 minutes per movie? I know I am Don Quixoteeing here but it's time to face facts Nolanites and Nolanistas...THE DARK KNIGHT TRILOGY WAS NOT ALL THAT!!!!!!! I think it's pretty obvious, and will become more so with the passage of time, that people got caught up in a mass hysteria moment. I LOOK FORWARD to BatFleck maybe putting the romantacized opinions even further in the rear view. And if not him, then they will reboot again. See, I must be the oddball. I want the ratio of Bruce Wayne to Batman to be about 7%-93%, not the other way around. Lets put superheroes back in the superhero movie. That's my motto for the new year. In fact I may make my own movie where the Cape doesn't even have a secret identity.

And John Carter of Mars got JOBBED. The media submarined that movie before folks could even make up their minds. It was a damned fine ENTERTAINING movie.
