9 Non-White Dudes Who Could Totally Play Doctor Strange

I like the Pedro Pascal choice. That is a solid one. But Lenny Kravitz? Danny f'n Pudi. Get the **** out of here. Most superheroes are WHITE. Get over it already. This need to constantly suggest that studios invest millions of dollars in a movie and risk alienating the fanbase by changing race/gender is ridiculous. Not because people are intolerant, because most want to see the representation of the character that they are USED TO. Hey, let's remake Old Yeller and have the dog be a transgendered robot alien. **** right off.

I actually think Kravitz might make a great Doctor Strange. After all, Strange has already had a sort-of afro in the past (albeit in a terrible property). Especially in an origin story, though, I think Kravitz could pull off a complete arc from irredeemable narcissist to mystic disciple.

Come to think of it, I'm not terribly offended by just changing the race or gender of a character from comic to movie in general. Done well, I find it interesting how they are executed. There are times, though, when it doesn't make sense, or is too contrived or ridiculous. On paper, for example, the revised FF sounds like a complete disaster, but if it's executed well in the end I'll roll with it. At least there's a good chance that the new characters will be better than Herbie the Robot. I hope.

Didn't you hear? Herbie the robot is in the movie. But they cast a clubfoot albino miniature peacock...because 'he was the best choice for the role'.

The problem with that line of thinking is that it will continue to remain that way if everyone just says, "tradition" or something to that effect. Two points to be made that are somewhat related.

One, James Bond. Recently suggested that Idris Elba could be in line for the next version after Daniel Craig. A lot of people are cool with that because...Idris Elba. A lot of people aren't. Why? Because he's black and James Bond is white. So? Does that mean a black man can't play that role simply because of skin color? Simply because a guy that exists only in a book has always been white?

To that point, I go to the second point. In Dallas Buyers Club, Jared Leto plays a transgender woman (who didn't exist in the actual life of this guy) and there was a lot of outrage from the trans community regarding this. The reason? Jared Leto isn't trans. The response? "That's why it's called acting".

So, if it's about "acting", why the issue with a black/chinese/latin/etc Dr. Strange? Is there something Dr. Strange does/did that would preclude this from happening? Was he a member at Augusta during the 60's? Obviously I'm being flippant here, but the point remains. We're either past people having issues with skin color (which would mean it wouldn't alienate enough people to care about the choice), or we aren't (in which case there is a bigger issue than a black guy playing James Bond).

Mostly, I don't know **** all about Dr. Strange, so I'm not making a comment about whether or not Lenny Kravitz would be good or not. Just pointing out that saying comics from the 40's to the 60's mostly had white superheroes and we can't deviate from that makeup feels lazy. Hell, we've already had a Norse God (who's literal description in Norse mythology is the whitest of all the Gods) played by a black guy and no one cared.

Idris Elba...again, was your Thor example***. Plus he wasn't the main character so there will be less pushback there. And you admit...you are 'Jon Snow' about Doc Strange so you aren't the core audience they risk alienating. So...a female Wolverine? You ok with that? An Asian Dr. X? How about a female black Magneto? I just think that if you want to have an argument about how caucasian-centric comics were in the 40's thru 60's thats one thing, but to try to create some kind of revisionist history just reeks of pandering. And, let's be honest, there will always be a 'glass-ceiling' here. They would never have anything other than a white Batman/Superman/etc. So you get second tier characters that get the Ultimates treatment. That's as, if not more, insulting. You expand this idea, say a black Dracula...oh wait, that happened with Blacula, and that is considered exploitation. For some reason this never comes into play with other literary adaptations. But in comic book movies it's ok, cause they are just comics.

***Idris Elba may be the great equalizer.

I think that it should always come down to the best person for the role regarding comic books or any other fictional work. The exceptions would be any that are based on historical figures that have some already established heritage. Or, a mythological character of the same stock. Thor as an example has already been set based on his history in Norse mythology. Abraham Lincoln couldn't suddenly be a Persian female swordfighter.

A female Wolverine though isn't the same thing. Wolverine is someone named...whatever his name is in the books. Logan or whatever. That character has already been defined in that sense. But that doesn't mean a Mexican dude couldn't be named Logan. A black guy as Magneto? Sure. Why not? Hell, it even would work in terms of the concentration camps as I'm sure the Nazi's rounded up black people at that time just like they did gays and gypsies in addition to Jews. I seriously can't think of any reason why it would matter to be honest. Can anyone give me a reason why a black Magneto would change anything at all about the character?

As far as Batman/Superman/Spiderman, those guys are embedded in the culture. I honestly only think you'd have pushback on a Superman that wasn't white with black hair. Batman (as Bruce Wayne) people don't really care too much about. It's about the villains. Spiderman, the only reason you'd get pushback there is because it's HIGHLY likely that a studio would cast Jaden Smith instead of someone who was good.

Ok. So Wolverine has an alter ego name...unlike HOW MANY superheroes? And I could see a CHICK named Logan. SEE...you prove my point. You know what you want to see in Logan/Wolverine. Stop apologizing for it.

How about a white guy playing Luke Cage? Like Mark Wahlberg?

SWEET CHRISTMAS! Feel the Vibrations!! Haha! :D

Seriously, the whole race/gender thing should be taken on a character by character basis drawn from how iconic that character's face is (e.g. Supes) and the character's background. I like Sammy, but I'll say it again, no way a Black Man rises that way up during the Howling Commandos era, well, unless you are changing the race of the entire brigade.

However, I don't think it would make as big of difference if a young Black man played Peter Parker in a movie set in contemporary NY.

As for the Dr. Strange movie, I hope it has enough of the late 60's/70's trippyness done in a good way. One can hope.

It'll have to be better than the TV Movie, right?
