Hawkman is a complicated character to talk about because he’s had a bunch of different origin stories that all kind of conflict and contradict when looked at as a whole. Also there are two versions of Hawkman, one who is an Earthman and one who is an alien that comes from a planet of hawk-like people. Due to the copy being put out by Warner Bros, it’s clear they’re looking at adapting the Earth based character. I think that’s pretty cool, because despite the fact that Hawkman is second only to Aquaman in getting made fun of as a lame superhero, I’ve always thought the original version of the character from the pages of “JSA” was underrated as a badass.
Hawkman starts his story as Prince Khufu. He’s an Egyptian Prince who has a lovely consort by the name of Chay-Ara and an archenemy by the name of Hath-Set. Hath-Set kills Khufu and Chay-Ara with a mystical knife that has the effect of causing them to be reincarnated over and over again as a tragic set of lovers. Eventually Khufu is reincarnated as an American archaeologist named Carter Hall and Chay-Ara a woman named Shiera Sanders. When Carter is digging around in the Egyptian sand, he touches the knife that caused his original death as Khufu, and suddenly becomes aware of all his past lives and experiences. He eventually uses this knowledge and his access to mystical, ancient stuff to turn himself into Hawkman and Shiera into Hawkgirl. So you get that Indiana Jones archeological adventure stuff with the character, you get a female love interest who is a badass fighter in her own right instead of just some boring, simpering twit, and also you get a hero who is huge and angry and smashes things a lot like Thor. Say what you will about Hawkman, I think he’s pretty swell. Get a good team working on this project, and it will be one of the upcoming superhero movies I’m most looking forward to.
I am all for this being a fan of all things Hawkman, but this is probably never going to happen and if it does it will be more a hot garbage fire than Green Lantern looks like. But, what the hell...who knows?
