Interesting read. I'm kinda like one of the people they mentioned in that article. I don't really read comics for social commentary. I like to be "entertained" as he puts it. I might be an escapist too. When you see bad stuff and have to deal with bad people all the time, why would someone assume that that's what they want when they read comics? Sorry but, I don't want to read about the drug problem in Gotham, I'm quite aware of the drug problem in society - thanks. Not to mention, if I wanted social commentary, I would just pick up a non fiction book.

If a writer wants to put social commentary in the comic, go for it. I have no problem with someone have HIV/AIDS or is gay. Heck, when I found out they made Rainmaker from Gen 13 a lesbian I thought it was the coolest thing. I thought Ex Machina was great how it used sprinklings of social commentary it but it didn't beat you over the head with the message. I think that's what would turn me off to a particular comic, if it was overly didactic.

But to be honest, if I was looking for social commentary in comics, I wouldn't be running to an superhero one...

Want to see a very weird video of Nick Cage on the set of GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE

Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news.

Now, I know, like you know... how much the first one blew... But I've heard really good things about this one. That it is getting the kind of treatment that the first should've had.

New Video and Images from SPIDER-MAN Reboot Set

Hmmm. Ok, I know that this is going to be digitally tweaked, but, so far, I could really care less one way or the other. Not good enough to dazzle, not bad enough to complain. I just think this is going to be a pretty by-the-numbers ordeal. Seems the only reason to replace Raimi/the cast was to lower the cost of the whole thing.

    I could be wrong BUT.....

I believe the issue was licensing rights.

My recollection is that SONY has the movie rights to Spider-Man but it's contingent upon four years not expiring without another Spider-Man movie being in production. They were having difficulty getting all the principles from the Raimi films signed to return and the clock was ticking so it became easier to simply start over from scratch in order to guarantee that they retained the rights.

Otherwise they risked losing the rights BACK to Marvel and the next multi ka-ga-ja-billion dollar Spider-Man movie would have been made by Marvel Films.

    But I could be wrong.....

No, actually that sounds right. I think FF is going thru the same dilemma right now.
