Reading the Fonda aka The Music Box might be closing it's doors....
i just read that it's closed for sures.
UPDATE: The Music Box is CLOSED... for reals... (for now?)
Things might not change too much then, I think Goldenvoice has been putting on a lot of the shows for the Music Box/Fonda
F*** this! Very bad news about the Fonda. Good thing I live in DT I guess. Gonna be a lot more shows pushed over to Club Nokia now. Really not a fan of that venue. Damn.
my days of going to shows in LA proper are pretty much over, but for the sake of everyone else, i hope so. that was a great venue. proper size. great sound. not sure what to make of the reports that they were dismantling the sound system though, as part of the "temporary" closure.
ya, club nokia is "meh" to me... it's not the worst, for sure though. the palladium is probably up high on the list of most disappointing venues. vintage nice in appearance place that got a nice remodel, but the sound is still crap. so it being huge (relative to places i like like the fonda and the troubadour), doesn't really help it's case for me. i think they got a new A/C system, too, though so at least i wasn't standing in a pit of sweaty bodies the last few times i was there.
Hope this is true:
UPDATE 2:15 p.m. By Diamond Bodine Fischer– Rumors that Goldenvoice was potentially taking over the space at The Henry Fonda have been quietly circulating for weeks without any substantial evidence. With the eviction of the Music Box business owners those rumors are getting louder. Goldenvoice’s press release this morning makes no mention of a take over but our sources insist that the deal between the Henry Fonda property owner and Goldenvoice is almost complete. They go on to tell us that this deal is going to happen fast, really fast. The hope is that none of the permits or licenses will lapse. If they are able to keep everything current then the doors at the Fonda could be opened again without the massive cost and time delay of reapplying with the city.
I feel the same about club Nokia , it's just OK.
FYI Goldenvoice is owned by AEG which also owns the whole of LA live (Nokia theater, club Nokia, Conga room etc)
This would make the town owned by 2 promoters AEG and Live nation for venues with a over 500+ cap .
I actually like the new palladium , much better than the old days.
The sound is great but I am usually in back or upstairs in the mezzanine not in the thick of things.
Saw the Pixies , Bloc Party , and Belle & Sebastian with a string section and they all sounded amazing
at the Palladium.
Last time I was at the Palladium was for Yeah Yeah Yeahs a long time back. Don't think I have been there since. It's nothing special other than the old, ballroom look.
I was just at the Orpheum for Puscifer and, although it wouldn't work for every show, thought it sounded good. The bar layout was for crap- long lines and poor set up. But it was tolerable. And the acoustics in the venue are suitable for loud concerts. I'd certainly be good with it if GV wants to push shows over there instead of Club Nokia.
I think the Yeah Yeah Yeahs at the Palladium was before the complete refresh of the venue.
Back in the 80's and 90's I used to go there loads of times and it always was lacking in the sound dept.
Just not set up for loud rock bands.
That being said I saw some great shows at the old palladium.
I believe the Orpheum is one of the only 500+ venues in the city to do non-ticketmaster shows.
A lot of artists/bands choose to do shows there because of this
AEG/Goldenvoice might not want to do shows there simply b/c they have 2 similar capacity venues just blocks away.
I saw a couple of shows @ the Orpheum (Stars , Heart ) both sounded pretty good.
The bar sucks there but you can pre-game it at the bar next door . (broadway bar?).
