Boy did I ever eat some FYF dust yesterday. Refused was especially challenging because it was end of day and I was right next to the pit up front. I don't even know how the band tolerated it, but they turned in a blistering set. Sound was perfect for them. Nice job by GV in this area for all the stages. Here's some quick reviews of everything I saw yesterday
Red Kross- Really liked them. Not a very big crowd but I thought they delivered a solid set.
Cloud Nothings- Not overly familiar with these guys and they didn't wow me. But they were really good. Plenty of heavy, spacey jams
****ed Up- High energy set. I was on the rail in front for this one. Crazy fun and I thought the band was super tight. Good stuff
Hot Snakes- Probably my fave set of the day. A buncha crusty dudes walked out on stage, looking like they just came from a backyard BBQ. And then they proceeded to deliver one of the best, straight ahead rock sets I've seen in a while. No bull****ting. No nothing but one thumping song after another. Loved it!
Sleigh Bells- Kind of like eating at McDonald's, it was convenient in terms of timing and I just needed something to fill that space. But later I was kind of regretting it. Not my thing. They're ok, I guess.
M83- I liked them. But I didn't LOVE them. And man, were there ever a ton of people there who LOVE them! Everything feels manufactured and a little stiff for me. But song-wise they have some good stuff. Glad I saw them, but once is probably enough.
Refused- Already commented above. But they were clearly thrilled to be there and the place went off. Would love to see them do some new music.
Bits and Pieces- Warpaint (just couldn't get into the vibe), Future Islands (band from NC- I liked what I heard) Comedy (was ok)
Ok, off to dine on more dirt!

Dinosaur Jr.- This may be the best set I saw the entire weekend. They just nailed it. And I no longer think of J Mascis as merely a good guitar player- he is GREAT! I've seen many "legendary" guitar players and I felt like his tone and skill were as good as anyone's. And I love any power trio where the bass player uses a Ricky 4001 to shore up the bottom.
Nicolas Jaar- had to choose between Converge and this but no regrets. I loved this set and it was a good change from a lot of the driving rock I saw over the weekend. Very murky and moody with lots of interesting transitions in both the music and the beats. Hoping to see a standalone set locally in the near future.
Joyce Manor- good So CA punk. Some decent songs in there and a fun way to get Sunday started
Against Me!- Solid set. Good enough I stayed through it all. Not my favorite music but good flow to the performance and a lot of love from the crowd
David Cross- His bit about getting a colonic with his girlfriend was hilarious (I love a good riff on poop). He also had a bit about modern politicians trying to attribute their policies to the forefathers. The whole thing was damn awesome! I felt like right after his set that I had already gotten my money's worth for the Sunday ticket
American Nightmare- Was like a bomb going off. I actually waded into the pit for about 2 seconds. Damn that was nuts! Not very familiar with them at all but what energy! Their set ended my night but I was good at that point.
Also caught some of Desaparecidos (liked them a lot), Cursive and Atlas Sound, along with a few other comedians before David Cross. Awesome event! Dust aside, it's one of the best festivals I've attended. Looking forward to next year.
Side note- on the subject of Quicksand, I missed them but by all accounts their performance killed. I'll see if I can swipe a write from one of the other forums.

i was there last nite. it was powerful, seems like there were a few more droned out pieces than last time, with drums and thor kicking ass. they played coward, which was crushing.
edit: i like the addition of having blue palms downstairs, with a door connecting it to the fonda, much better beer at much lower prices than the actual venue.
