    October 6, 2012: Whiskey A Go Go

I just bought tickets for the Whiskey show without blinking. Provided the baby boy doesn't come early (due Oct 22), I'm there.
the show saturday was so much fun.

    Openers:
Stop Breathing: minor thrash punk from oxnard. is the guy from the Missing 23rd. Lots of songs about everyone dying one day, so live life to the fullest.
Take Offense: guys were from chula vista, I would've sworn they were from new york. Was pretty much Madball. Heavy, chunky breakdowns, followed by more heavy, chunky breakdowns, with a few guitar solos added in for good measure. same style voice.

Man it was great to see GR back on stage. The place went pretty nuts from start to finish. Just felt right. Good mix of new and old songs ("new" being most recent material before they went on hiatus). A little sore from jumping in (getting old), lots of arm in arm sing-alongs. Something about them ending with Libertine and the words "when i've strayed in darker times, when i'm feeling left behind, you're always there. the music somehow seems to get me by" before shaking almost everyone's hands and heading out.

A perfect last hoorah before daddyhood next week.

that's great to hear! i considered going to the chain rxn show but i'm less of a fan than my husband is and he has had too many things going on within the last month to even get pumped for it so we passed. the last show i went to before i became a mom was a 3 night stint (one of the nights was on my wedding anniversary) of jonah's onelinedrawing performing his entire catalog from A-Z. it was a month before my due date. haha.

Still one of my favorite bands although they've never played around me since I saw them in San Diego in 2007(I think) before they ended up breaking up.

Unfortunately, I figured the end was near then because there were about 50 people there to watch them at new Soma that held a couple thousand people

"Symptoms of a Leveling Spirit" is actually still one of my top 10 punk albums.

I find out Jim Lindberg is now back with pennywise (weird), then that this will be happening:

    January 18, 2013 - Hollywood Palladium
    Pennywise
    Lagwagon
    Pulley
    Strung Out

    Yes.

I guess the only question, do i find a babysitter or buy child headphones and take a 3 month old to his first show....

ya, i heard about the show yesterday. i mentioned it to my husband who was a bigger pennywise fan than i (him having lived in the south bay during their heyday)... he replied saying it would've been a good show... 15 yrs ago since he's old now (late 30s + works over 60 hrs/week) and doesn't have it in him to go to shows anymore unless it's his absolute favorites. he's holding out for a quicksand tour.

personally, i'm going with a friend to see hot water music at the observatory in santa ana in february. i've been waiting 8 yrs to see them again!

if you have it in you, i totally advocate going to the pennywise show on the merits of the supporting acts alone though.

I never got into Hot Water Music as much as I probably should have. And I think I've seen them 3 times in my life (although I think all 3 times may have been because I was going to see Dillinger Four or Avail and they were supporting). Thoughts on an album to start with?

i'd probably start with Caution. that's my favorite album of theirs. i've been spinning Exister a lot lately and it's in my top list for 2012 releases. then i'd say you could round it out with No Division and A Flight And A Crash. you've probably seen them live more than i have since i didn't start to get in to them until the early 2000s and then they went on hiatus not too long after.

i got in to them after all these experiences--
    1. seeing this video on are-oh-vee:

    2. seeing them open for another band i was seeing. i've seen chuck ragan perform solo way more than i've seen HWM. i'm a fan of his revival style punk folk and raspy voice and then i'm a fan of HWM's melodic punk/hardcore in the same vein as another band i enjoy--leatherface.

    3. buying the alkaline trio/hot water music split. my favorite song because of that split is probably "rooftops". but imo, Caution is the overall best release by them.

btw, that judge onesie i was talking about can be found here:
    Judge - Logo - Baby Onesie - Shirt :: RevHQ.com

i'm so pumped for the show in february, i'm only bummed it's so far away in the future.

Refused tomorrow night at the Fonda! Stoked to finally see them in a non-festival setting.

Had to give away my ticket to A Place To Bury Strangers on Tuesday night at the Troubadour. When I bought it, it didn't click with me it was election night. Ah well. Highly recommend seeing them if you don't care as much about the election results.

Oh, and Hot Snakes at Al's Bar in Long Beach on Dec 2nd! Managed a ticket for it prior to sell out. That one's gonna be fun. They killed at FYF.
