Wow, might buy tickets if they're still available this friday
I ended up buying tickets for both days. Couldn't help myself.
Went last night - I don't know how I am up this morning.
Showed up as first band finishing, not sure who it was or what they sounded like.
Pour Habit up first - got a taste of these guys from fat wreck album I received last year. Pretty good - sound kind of like an offspring/nofx mash-up but with thrash guitars. Singer jumped in the pit for a song, I lost him in about 10 seconds in but vocals kept coming through so he must have survived. I don't know if it's a house of blues thing, but the bass/drum was pumped up so much it was hard to hear the vocals/guitar work very well.
Old Man Markley next. Great. Got their album last year and very much enjoyed it. Folk-bluegrass-punk. Violin, washboard, and all. Banjo was lost about halfway through the set, but they recovered. Sounded very good.
No Use for a Name - prime reason I attended. pretty good set, for what they could fit into about 30-40 minutes. Invincible, Answer is Still No, Growing Down, Soulmate, Justified Black Eye were the "oldies but goodies", with all others a good mix from more betterness through feel good record of the year. Seem to play the newer stuff much faster in live setting, to my liking.
nofx was nofx. Fat mike came out and quickly uttered "this may be the best night of your lives, for us it's just 'eh', another night". Announced they were hurting as they were up at 7 am at Pepe's downtown doing tequila shots. He, however, wouldn't start playing until a straw was found for his drink, then proclaiming he was going to go have his girlfriend urinate in the cup, add a bunch of alcohol, and drink it. They plowed through songs with the standard comedic banter in between, and many times picked apart random attendees in the crowd.
Hightlights include the racist song (a quick ska-party interlude in between each band member telling a racist joke), two girls from backstage running out to sing lori meyers (one of whom i swore was hayley from paramore, but I digress), three versions of f*** the kids, and a slew of old time favorites.
$9 for a jameson and coke - love the house of blues.
