This year's FYF was probably the best of the ones I've attended. But the MBV sound issues were a killjoy for me. It got so bad, they had to take a 5 minute break and leave the stage while the techs tried to fix things. It didn't work. Vocals were completely lost for the last half of the show and the drums and bass randomly cut in/out. One song was almost completely midi tracks and no live drums at all. Kevin Shields was gracious and apologetic but it was hard to watch. The Holocaust was a scant 3 minutes long or so. By that point, I think even then the band was worried the sound would cut out again and that would've looked pretty damn dumb considering the nature of it. Sucks cause there were so many other highlights to this festival.

They probably had a hard db limit
A brick wall compressor inserted on the bus to govern it so it sounds random when it clips but it probably wasn't
That's what happens with loud for loudness sake .
Don't get me wrong MBV loveless is a great record but that kind of sound is not so festival friendly .
I remember seeing them at the palace or Avalon in the 90's and the last 20 minutes or so of the set was just the guitar feeding back at a very loud level

This years FYF fest looked really good
Wish I would've gone but circumstance kept me away .
    Tix went cheap on Craigslist
FYF was probably the best value festival this year .
    Apart from Hardly Strictly Bluegrass
in SF which is usually free.

You're referring specifically to the Holocaust here. I do think your assessment on what went wrong is accurate though. I know a little about sound systems and believe they hit whatever the threshold was. But I don't think when it went out last night they were playing particularly loud... certainly nowhere near as loud as they would have gotten on the Holocaust (which, as mentioned, only lasted a few minutes last night).

I'd have to agree. Value-wise, this was hard to top. And Chelsea Wolfe, while totally out of place in broad daylight, was sublime.

Just back home from a quick in and out from SLO to LA to Largo last night to see Neil Finn (with Jon Brion). As always, Neil put on a great show and played a lot of new material that will be on him upcoming LP. Largo is such a pleasure to go to. I just wish we lived closer b/c we'd go there a lot more. I LOVE that place.

Over the last couple of months we've had the pleasure of seeing Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters (yea, I had tears streaming down my face from being overjoyed at hearing him sing some Zep tunes), Son Volt (they sound as fresh now as they did 12 years ago - though Jay Farrar is just NOT a very chatty dude), Brit Floyd (a Pink Floyd cover act that really put on a great, very long show at the MidState Fair - cheap fun!), and Russell Brand at the Fremont Theater in SLO (the Messiah Complex tour - super funny and thoughtful - though he IS a diva).

Upcoming we've got Glenn Tilbrook (SLO Brew), Flaming Lips/Tame Impala (SB Bowl - can't ****ing WAIT for this one - Dia de los Muertos show!!!), Junip (Fernwood, Big Sur - second time seeing them this year and the super small venue in Big Sur is certain to make this a crazy, nutty, potentially epic experience), and Andrew Bird (Rio, Santa Cruz).

Also heard from Flan at Largo that Andrew Bird is likely playing there later this year and that Neil Finn will be back, likely in December. So all you singer/song writer fans might want to pay attention to their calendar and get added to their emailing list.....

Hope to see some of you at one of these shows.

On Friday I went and got my tickets for The Cult this Sunday, which was apparently a good move since it was sold out today when I went to TicketBastard to try to figure out if it is a different set (they are playing Saturday and Sunday in LA, but at different clubs). Playing the entire Electric album is all well and good, but anything that increases my chances of hearing Fire Woman and/or Sweet Soul Sister is even better.

I also got my tickets for Motley Crue in Vegas the night after Frozen Fury and Helloween (a band I would have gotten into sooner if they hadn't chosen one of the ten worst band names in all history *cough* Korn *cough*) at the Grove. So now I am going from seeing a lot of concerts in the next six weeks to seeing a ton of concerts in the next six weeks. There are a few other ones I could see if I want to take it to a ridiculous number of concerts. At least this is good timing, as I have barely any hockey games to play or watch.

    Thursday: Circle II Circle
Friday: Damnation Angels, Xandria, Soilwork, Shadow Gallery
Saturday: Circus Maximus, Armored Saint, Sabaton
    Sunday: The Cult
Sep 13: Testament, Anthrax, Megadeth, Sabaton, Iron Maiden
    Sep 21: Delain, Kamelot
    Sep 29: Motley Crue
    Oct 7: Helloween

Probably adding Volbeat on Sep 16 but going up to LA on a Monday is not my favorite. My Maybes involve going old school with Saxon on Oct 4 or 5 and/or Diamond Head and Raven on Oct 16 or 19. Also may see Jack Russell on Sep 20. There are also a few things at the LA Fair, but then I'd have to go to Pomona.

FYF was my 3rd My Bloody Valentine experience so it was kind of an (expected) let down. Plus their best songs IMO are from Ecstasy and Wine / You Made Me Realise EP's and they were scant on those (No "Thorn," "Never Say Goodbye" etc). Oh well. For a festival FYF isn't unbearable

Went to see Blue Man Group @ The Hollywood Bowl with The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. Really good concert (except when this crappy Brazilian group 'Monobloco' took the stage and did a song w/o the Blue Men or the Orchestra accompanying them. This show was better than their Monte Carlo show.
