Criterion Teases Gojira (Godzilla) Blu-ray
YES, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!
Criterion Teases The Lady Vanishes Blu-ray
Nice. I only have the original Criterion DVD, not the remastered one they released afterwards and I've been wanting to upgrade it anyway.
The Lady Vanishes is such a great movie! :D
Criterion Offers Up Ernst Lubitsch’s ‘Design For Living’ & 3 BluRay Upgrades For December > The Playlist
Marking the only fresh movie to get a wacky C stamped on it, Ernst Lubitsch‘s “Design For Living” will join the collection, boasting some solid extras. This pre-code comedy, adapted by Ben Hecht from a play by Noël Coward, stars a great trio in Gary Cooper, Fredric March, and Miriam Hopkins as Americans in Paris. The story follows a commercial artist (Hopkins) unable—or unwilling—to choose between two suitors: the dashing painter (Cooper) or a playwright (March).SONOFA... I can't afford all this ****, Criterion! Slow down!As for the rest, here’s what’s getting an upgrade to shiny 1080p: Alfred Hitchock‘s classic “The Lady Vanishes” will unspool its classic mystery of a missing woman on a train in BluRay while two Seijun Suzuki titles—“Branded To Kill” and “Tokyo Drifter”—will go high definition as well. Great new covers for the both of these, too (particularly for ‘Drifter’).
Great Poster For Janus Films’ Re-Release Of Jean-Luc Godard’s ‘Weekend’ > The Playlist
Unfortunately, the movie has been sorely missing on this side of the ocean in a decent DVD edition. Hell, there hasn’t even been one. New Yorker Films issued a disc in 2005, but it has long been out of print. With the label going through some financial and ownership upheaval the rights seem to have shifted more promisingly to Janus Films who are releasing the film in a brand new 35mm print that will make its way around arthouses this fall.
Being John Malkovich and more rumored to the Collection. | The Criterion Digest
Innnnteresting.Over a week ago now the folks over at CriterionCast posted an article about Criterion’s All Tomorrow’s Parties line-up. As stated in the article usually the films shown here are either in the Collection or will be heading to the Collection. Of course the one that everyone is up in arms over is the Kaufman/Jonze film Being John Malkovich.
Anyway, there are four other films that are yet to be announced for the Criterion Collection. Belle de Jour which was hinted at back in the July Newsletter. Deconstructing Dad: The Music, Machines and Mystery of Raymond Scott, Putney Swope (which makes sense of this), and Quadrophenia.
‘Godzilla’ Stomps & ‘Belle De Jour’ Swoons Into The Criterion Collection In January > The Playlist
I don't know much about those others, but I am ALL OVER that Godzilla disc! But if monster movies aren’t your thing, Criterion hasn’t forgotten about their arthouse fans, as Luis Buńuel‘s masterpiece “Belle De Jour” arrives in a brand new edition. The movie that contains the defining performance of Catherine Deneuve‘s career, gets the treatment it deserves including a commentary; video piece featuring writer and sexual-politics activist Susie Bright (!) and film scholar Linda Williams; new and archival interviews and more. Not too shabby.
Also arriving: Francesco Rosi‘s bullfighting biopic “The Moment of Truth”; French New Wave pioneer Jean-Pierre Gorin gets an Eclipse set with “Poto And Cabengo,” “Routine Pleasures” and “My Crasy Life” included and finally Steven Soderbergh‘s sprawling drug war drama gets the hi-def treatment with a brand spanking new BluRay edition featuring all your favorite extras from the DVD.
