Come to think of it, I also think the fact that I don't care for all that much for the Iron Man and Sherlock movies plays a part in this. I want to want to see RDJ in a movie again.

Can we be honest for a second here...Tony Stark is really just RDJ being himself. Seriously, go watch him in Air America or Johnny Be Good and tell me that's not just high school Tony Stark. Or watch him in Natural Born Killers and tell me it's not Tony Stark with a British accent.
Love the guy, but it's not like he's got range.*

Or one of my favorites, Zodiac.

Yeah that's sorta what I'm saying too. It's not that he CAN'T do it, just doesn't do it too often is all.

Zodiac is the only Fincher movie I haven't seen! :(
Even my parents saw it at the movies. I guess they still go on movie dates.
Their first date movie? Chinatown. :P

Zodiac is Finsher's best.
If we can get back to Batman for a minute... I'm curious, what about Dark Knight Rises makes it pretentious? I'm not saying I disagree that it is, but I'm wondering what, exactly, people think it is that separates it. Because it has a "message"?

Do yourself a favor and watch it. As adgy said, it's Fincher's best and I'm a huge fan of Se7en.

I'll answer for them. It's a comic book movie that isn't mind-numbing with its overuse of special effects and cheap one-liners. TDKR isn't like all other comic films which makes it pretentious. How dare someone to go for something different. Blasphemy!

And I will counterpoint...it's a superhero movie, not about superheroes, that revels in its gritty realistic depiction of folks who wear underoos over their trousers, starring maybe one of the most annoying ' I am an ARTISTE' actors whose bunghole is clenched so tight he can turn coal into diamonds.
And no Adgy. Fight Club is Fincher's best followed in lock step as a 1a/1b by Seven. Zodiac is a distant third.
