'Funky' Claude Nobs...we hardly knew ye. Funky Claude Nobs, Montreux Jazz Festival icon, dies | Classic Rock
who doesn't remember that line?Nobs is named in Deep Purple classic track Smoke On The Water, which recounts the story of a fire at the the event in 1971, during which ‘Funky’ Claude helped Frank Zappa fans escape from the flames. Purple themselves finally played at Montreux in 1996 and have been back five times since.
Skiing accident at age 76? Depart doing what you love! My own grandpa, who loved fishing, fished 4 of his last 7 days, including his final day, at age 94.‘Funky’ Claude Nobs, founder of the Montreux Jazz Festival, has died at the age of 76.
He’d been in a coma since a skiing accident during his Christmas holiday in Switzerland.
Condolences to his friends and family and sorry that he is no longer among the living, but it sounds like he lived his days fully.
RIP, Claude.
