I'm reading the book right now, I have the 3 Swedish ones ready to go in my Netflix. I've been seeing posters and stills and all sorts of stuff at work for a while now. A friend of mine suggested I see this one regardless of finishing the book or seeing the original first. I'm torn. Thoughts?
Hrm. You can probably get away with watching the movies before finishing the book, but if you've already started it it may ruin some stuff for you...
As for which movie to watch first... it's hard to say because I haven't seen the remake yet. I don't imagine it would ruin anything much either way, though. I expect you'll appreciate Noomi Rapace's performance regardless of how well Rooney Mara does and I'm sure Fincher's technical savvy won't overshadow the original too much, as well.
So I think you're ok either way.
I mean really, the main characters look exactly like the ones from the Swedish version and the cinematography looks similar as well. BTW he wanted them to use Swedish accents. Crimany, there are plenty of great actors in Sweden and they all speak English. Ugh I just don't get why people feel the need to remake great movies. Still need to see the third one first then I suppose I'll catch this one sometime on TV.
Rant over sorry to poop on your parade.
I haven't seen the original, but I get what SirJW is saying.
This sort of started with Abre Los Ojos/Vanilla Sky. It's practically the same movie and both star Penelope Cruz. Ugh!
Hahaha! Some of the early German movies (think: 1930's) were made twice, with the actors speaking German and then again speaking broken English, lol!
It's a ballsy move to put this out at the holidays. After all, I have been constantly told how 'rapey' it is...and, let's face it, with the washed out color palette and the cold Reznor music it doesn't exactly scream festive movie going experience. I still have the originals on the shelf unwatched. I like Fincher, but feel almost no need to rush into a theater and see this. I am interested to see what the numbers look like by Monday. With Fincher already lobbying to film the 2 remaining books back to back it is going to need to perform well in order to justify that. Funny how Fincher is in such high regard. Alien3 anyone. Folks hated that movie...unjustifiably so. It's a great movie and deserves a lot of love. I personally don't think he will ever do better than Se7ven/Fight Club...those are epic flicks and truly special.
From what I've heard, the original Swedish movies deviated from the storyline of the books. Is this true?
