The Silmarillion will not be made into a movie. The Tolkien estate won't sell the film rights, especially not to Peter Jackson.

Like I said, I've never read The Silmarillion, but from what I have been told, haha, it's worth reading for Lord of the Rings peeps. And yet some cynics say it's just just scraps, but as I was told by Tolkien peeps...in their Birmingham pseudo accents..who wrote their English master thesis on him (whatever happened to writing a thesis on Joyce or Woolf?) that The Silmarillion is a writer sketching out his mythology and doing the roughs of what he wanted to do. And yet some people still claim it's his son, Christopher, just publishing leftovers for profit. That's sorta harsh, ain't it? :\
I want to say it's the former, Tolkien trying to figure out things and yes the estate got richer, but still, interesting stuff.
Funny, but when I was growing up Fantasy was the lowest of the low, Science Fiction was what nerds read (we weren't just wimps, but got good grades in science), and I did, but I did watch that Hobbit film as a child, so I knew what Hobbits were back then.
But didn't read LOTR until the movies came out despite knowing what it was and didn't read the Hobbit until 2 years ago when a teacher assigned it, and really got it.
Don't know, but I was thinking about the whole question regarding the idea that geek culture has reached the mainstream and that geeks who liked Tolkien now they can talk about it openly. And that's sort of because Tolkien touched on a nerve. He was trying to touch an Anglo Mythology mythology need, lol, that Led Zeppelin got right way, but we got in spells (60's and then now). Us being an England inspired we can draw upon it as our own mythology.
So some people argue that The Silmarillion is a boring version an English version (non translated, Lol) Old Testament, and he wrote Lord of the Rings for himself, and the Hobbit for the audience. So what what did he write the stuff in The Silmarillion? He's really secret self? That's so 20tch century British literature right there (write for your self, the audience, and scholars who will tear everything apart).
Still, lol, I decided to focus on Woolf for my project. :P
Annapurna might be one of those Tolkien scholars I was talking about!
So why wouldn't Chris give up the rights to that, I mean, isn't LOTR & the Hobbit the big thing?
And yeah, I keep thinking of the Third Man when I look at your icon.![]()
Didn't this new take on the Hobbit already fold in other source material. If so, the Tolkien estate should already be lawyered up. Somehow I don't think they will be that opposed.
Why Isn’t The Silmarillion Being Made Into a Movie or Radio Show? | Middle-earth and J.R.R. Tolkien News & ArticlesMany fans do not seem to be aware of the fact that Peter Jackson is not legally permitted to use material from other books such as The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales of Numenor and Middle-earth, or even The Adventures of Tom Bombadil and The Road Goes Ever On. And all the information published in The History of Middle-earth and The History of The Hobbit is equally off-limits. This much was made very clear to me by the people at Weta who asked me to help them with research for the “Lord of the Rings” movies.
Unless something changes with the Tolkien family’s position on the matter, fans will have to wait for these other works to go into the public domain before people can really begin to mine them for cinematic adaptation. Under current U.S. law that means nothing will be available until 75 years after Christopher Tolkien’s death. That’s time enough for people to think about how they might adapt a story as complex and sophisticated as The Silmarillion. Maybe.
(Yes, I'm a Tolkien geek)![]()
I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this. on one hand, wooooohoooooooo! three more movies instead of two! but on the other hand, I'm a tad worried the movies will drag a bit. I am really interested to see what other stuff from the appendices he's going to add though.
ah well. he did a pretty damn fantastic job with the LOTR movies, so I'm just going to have to have faith that these three will be just as awesome.
