I just think that the Bond franchise languished because times changed. You had Austin Powers basically showing how goofy/irrelevant the old formula was and then the Bourne franchise accomplished what XXX tried(and failed) to do, rebrand the spy formula for the MOUNTAIN DEW EXTREME crowd. I get it, the Moore movies have to be viewed by younger kids as just plain old fashioned and silly. It had to be done...it's just a shame.
Moore had a certain gentleman quality about him. That and his extreme perviness made him fun to watch. It seems like they like to alternate between campy and serious when they pick their actors.
I also miss the old Bond score that they'd play during the movies back then. Now you only really get it in the very beginning and end, not as much throughout. Even during the quiet scenes.
It's just so hard to compare old Bond movies to new ones. There are so many flaws that we just forgive or ignore in movies we grow up with, and Bond is definitely in that category for me. They're campy as hell but they have a special place in my heart because I watched them as a kid and thought they were awesome and believable. When I watch new ones I judge them by a completely different standard. Had they truly done a Bond movie in the old school vein I think it would be a monumental bomb and thought of as a disgrace to the franchise or an attempt at a parody.
Though it is quite remarkable to have a movie franchise that stretches for 50 years without being complete remakes of previous movies.
I don't think the Bond movies have changed that much over the years, it's just that they're more "grim n' gritty" now than they were before.

In 1999, movies like The Phantom Menace, The Matrix, and The Mummy came out with really innovative special effects and then suddenly everyone wanted to outdo each other. What we got were lots of movies, including The Matrix and Mummy sequels, where the effects were getting worse because technology wasn't advanced enough yet for what they were trying to accomplish. Batman Begins reminded that you could make that type of movie with minimal CGI and have it be every bit as interesting to watch.
