Thread: Last Movie Watched

I would put Cap'n probably #2 or 3 overall behind Iron Man and, depending how I felt, Avengers. I wasn't as put off by the montage in Cap'n, to me it fit in with the feel of the newsreel footage that showed before movies back in that time(which they even demonstrated). It was a little long and coulda used some trimming but it had a feeling of action adventure like Raiders that really fit with the character. Extremely well cast and probably the most well fleshed out and better realized of the Marvel flicks in my opinion.

Raiders was not action montages, though - every action scene was part of the story and moved it along unless you want to count the intro as an unrelated appetizer. I recall Captain America going to the action montage several times. I agree that the casting was great and the lead did an amazing job to make me so interested in a boy scout who throws a shield.

Had I made the movie, the time jump would have happened in the middle so that the repercussions could have been dealt with, or I would have ended the movie there and had the sequel deal with that.

1) Avengers, 2) Iron Man, 3) Captain America, 4) Iron Man 2 (not as awful as it is made out to be, but certainly parts in the middle are utter crap), 25) Thor (90% nonsense and having Anthony Hopkins involved and all the Shakespearian BS does not make it less ridiculous), 400) either of the awful Hulk movies

As someone who has never read a DC or Marvel comic book (and can't tell you which one the Avengers are from), I would be interested in seeing a Hawkeye movie, especially before another Thor movie or a Hulk movie (unless it was with the new Hulk from the Avengers). More than that, though, if they could make a Black Widow / Catwoman movie, I would be much obliged.

The Italian Job - Man, this was WAY different from the remake. Michael Caine gets out of prison and finds a job waiting for him, left by a friend who was just recently killed by the mob. The job is to steal 4 million from the mob. It's kind of a wacky heist movie with some really funny parts, but there were also a number of parts that I didn't quite get. Overall, I really liked it, though. Especially the ending.

This movie has also pushed me over the edge and from now on, I will watch any Michael Caine movie older than... I don't know. I haven't decided yet. But, man, that guy is ****ing cool.



Hitokiri (aka Tenchu!) - Hideo Gosha is one of those directors I've read more about then I've seen his movies. A lot of his **** has only started getting released out here recently, so I haven't had a chance to watch it. I bought a bootleg of this flick after hearing from many people at many different points in time that it was not only Gosha's best, but one of the best samurai movies ever made.

And it was ****in' great.

The story revolves around Izo Okada, played by Tomisaburo Wakayama who you might recognize as the original Zatoichi or the main character in the Lone Wolf & Cub/Shogun Assassin movies. He's a low level samurai who rises through the ranks by being a bloodthirsty, brutal killer. He thrives on his hardcore reputation as a badass and he drinks and whores around during his downtime. He's fiercely loyal to his boss, played by Tatsuya Nakadai, a politician who is trying to gain power for his clan in chaotic times. As Okada gets more and more out of control, his boss starts slapping him down and treating him like ****, to the point where Okada has to make a decision between loyalty to his sensei and his own sense of self respect.

It's a violent flick with a lot of political machinations going on in the background, and there's actually a lot more going on than what I just described, but that's the gist of it. Wakayama's performance is by far the best I've ever seen from him, the cinematography is ****ing gorgeous and it's a really great story. The film didn't disappoint in any way, shape or form and I hope that someone (CRITERION, PLEASE) gives it a proper release out here sometime soon.

EXCISION - Social awkward girl with a blood fetish and dreams of becoming a surgeon. Right off the bat, this is not a horror movie. There are some weird, bloody scenes, but I thought they were actually pretty artistic and visually stimulating. It even has a couple of good laughs in it. They managed to get a pretty strong cast for this film, too, and they made this film work for me. Thumbs up.

Saw this the other day...and I enjoyed it yet I am not sure how much I liked it. It's dense...very meta/movie-within-a-movie and I ain't sure if it was a little too clever for it's own good. Great performances across the board but there is a stretch in the second third of the flick that SLOWS THINGS DOWN considerably and kind of kills momentum. Pretty sure it is a movie I will come to love upon repeated viewings but it isn't as immediate as In Bruges was for me. This is really a home viewing flick, it's a small, chatty flick that loses a little something in the theater experience. Some solid laughs throughout for the whole crowd but ultimately this is too difficult to be a crowd pleaser.




This...was a disappointment. A really mean spirited 'found footage' flick wrapped in a cliched family drama. It's not a complete fail but it is REALLY boring(almost criminal for a fright flick). It's a movie that has a basic concept and what you think would be a predictable ending, that fills it's entire running time with red herrings and distractions. So, when the(for me at least)unexpected ending hit I was too tired to give a rats ass. An almost identical movie...the Possession, was just so much better because so much more care was put into fleshing out the characters and propelling the narrative thru actual plot development. There will no doubt be a totally unecessary sequel...and buyer beware. NOTE TO HOLLYWOOD...if you design a 'boogeyman' to try to generate an icon, you have to actually DO SOMETHING with it. A good design is only the beginning.

I FINALLY got around to watching Let Me In the other night. I liked it. But I think I was able to appreciate it because it didn't stray too far from the original. Nice pace to it, beautifully shot. Those 2 kids are good little actors. Chloe Moretz isn't going to be your typical little Hollywood starlet. She's good. I wanted to beat the **** out of this bully kid more than the original, tho, that's for sure.

It's been said before, but it's the rare remake that actually deserves to exist. Love the setting and the overall '70's vibe. Yeah, I hope Moretz does not succumb to the 'child-star' thing because a)she continues to do genre work(not 'too good' for it) and b)because she is pretty special so far and only getting better.

She's the main reason I think the "Carrie" remake could turn out well.
