Didn't care for it particularly much. I just felt like it tried way too hard. They really wanted it to be clever and "meta" or whatever, but I never felt like it was sincere. It's just not well written enough to do what they were trying to. And if Christopher Walken never acts in another movie I won't be sad.
Snatch and Lock Stock were two incredible movies with two great Statham performances. That is why it hurts to see him waste a chance to be in a good movie by being in crap. It is better for him to be in a supporting spot like in The Italian Job than starring in garbage. Never saw Revolver. Was Rocknrolla the one that was actually supposed to be watchable?Originally Posted by jerseydevil

Good point about Italian Job. Like Snatch to a point, but Lock/Stock more, Statham is good as an ensemble player. Not saying he can't carry a movie...but it has to be strong material. I really think the Transporter flicks were close. He had that action thing going, but he also had the weird sub-stuff with the older cop. Revolver is a preachy meta-mess, but damn...you gotta watch RockNRolla. Might be Ritchie's best flick.
And yeah, the Crank movies are 'love em or hate em' me, I dig the craziness.
That Walken comment is a little harsh Brownie, I am actually looking forward to rewatching this when it hits dvd. I do think it was trying too hard, but I also think it had a lot going on, almost too much to judge by one viewing.

I love him but he takes me out of the movie I'm watching every time these days. Not talking about the old stuff of course, he was brilliant, but in the newer ones he's just... Walken. Not his character, he's just Christopher Walken. It might have been a bit unfair to bring it up for this movie but it's been simmering inside of me for a while and I had to get it out. There never is a point that I'm not aware that I'm watching Walken.
Incredible job done by Jack Black in this documentary/movie that may be part black comedy/part drama. While the supporting actors are solid as well, Black dominates this movie.
I read some reviews afterward and found it pretty interesting that real interviews with townspeople where the crime occurred were interspersed in the movie.

Assault! Jack The Ripper - A 70's Japanese roman porno sleazefest. Directed by the recently deceased Yasuharu Hasebe, who has done some really great stuff, which is why I bought it some years ago. It was alright. Not something I would bother to buy if I didn't already have it, although there was a short documentary about the roman porno film in the special features that was pretty decent, if short.
Cave Of Forgotten Dreams - Pretty nice documentary about the Chauvet Cave in France, which houses the oldest known cave paintings in the world. There were some parts that dragged a bit, namely when the camera just sits on paintings we've already seen for a somewhat extended period while the music plays, but otherwise it was interesting and enjoyable. Not sure what was up with the coda and the (faked) albino alligators, but it didn't ruin the movie for me at all.
The Sitter - Ehh. Had some funny parts, but was mostly forgettable.
Kinda liked Sitter more than I should have, JB Smoove and Sam Rockwell were fun in a kinda by the numbers flick.
This was on the radar for a while. Lots of good reviews on the horror sites. And Margo Martindale(Mags Bennett/Justified) is always good, so I saw this on Hulu Plus and instantly clicked.
Not a horror movie per se. Sort of a really ****ed up character study/afterschool special cranked up to 10. Great performances and some nice 'not all is as it seems' story weaving basically about decent folks who make really horrible personal decisions and the repurcussions those decisions have. Well done and definitely worth a watch.
Going to say this because it needs to be said...**** YOU Ti West. You are not the second coming of Hitchcock or whatever you are shooting for. Ok, House of the Devil, good(not great) movie but overrated beyond comprehension. All you did was ape 1970's "Hellhouse on Hell Street" type scares and slow burn tension. You did it well, but imitation is imitation. This movie exposes your weaknesses. Tries too hard to be a quiet hipster douche Ghostbusters for 80 minutes and then tacks a bunch of non-sequitur jump scares and (admittedly decent) creep outs in some rushed attempt to give your meandering some resolution. But then you make sure to pull back, spending 5 minutes wandering towards what appears to be some sort of conclusion only to run away from anything resembling logic while trying to say 'SEEEEEEE I'm so clever! Come to your own conclusions'. LAZY movie populated by stereotypical characters doing stupid things while being tremendously annoying. Not fun(which it tries to be) not scary(which it inexplicably and clumsily tries to switch tone to) and just generally unwatchable. I do NOT know why you are given such love by critics. You have done NOTHING original and done nothing to make your influences your own. You sir, are a hack. Think about that next time you get up in front of a q & a audience and take that 'splitting the atom' tone. This movie will fight V/H/S(which you also participated in...well done) for worst movie of 2013.
Hurm. Heard so much about this. Maybe too much. Simple concept...and that's the problem. Nothing really happens. I mean, I get it...what this man does is pretty monstrous...but it has the same feeling that you get when you hear about someone peeing in the communal coffeepot at work...first 'ewww' than 'oh well'. Never really explains anything or even hint that there is anything other than pure sociopathy at work. Like I said...decent, yet I guess I needed a little more meat on the bare bones.
