The Twilight Samurai, about a Samurai struggling to support his children and sick mother in a time of change in 19th century Japan. Very cool movie, it felt authentic both visually and in how it depicted the day-to-day life of a humble man without much ambition in advancing his social and economic status but fulfilled in other ways. The movie is very light on action and has a slow pace but is atmospheric, melancholic and beautiful to look at.

Now that's a funny coincidence since I just watched Scanners for the first time. Not exactly a Christmas movie but I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Interesting turn to feature a lot of Japanese culture and gorgeous foreign scenery but I just didn't have much fun and while I guess it works as a character study, it just wasn't for me.

Finally saw this a few weeks back, although I remembered a scene from the movie so I must have seen a portion sometime before. Pretty damn solid apocalyptic action flick.

Quirky, odd, and interesting like most of Wes Anderson's flicks. I was surprised by how much I loved Owen Wilson in this movie.

Man, Michael Ironside is such a great nut job in this movie. Liked the premise and I could stand the 80's vibes, including some shockingly mediocre acting that didn't detract from the movie for me.

Good enough to overlook my Clooney distaste, since I think he was great in this role. It did a great job of accurately and realistically portraying the issues facing a parent when another parent suffers a tragedy.

John Goodman is so damn awesome in this movie!

You know, for as thin as the plot was Benedict Cumberbatch is so damn amazing as the villain that I'm willing to forgive any misgivings I had while watching.

Occasionally funny and often sad story about a dysfunctional family and their journey to a beauty pageant.

A combination of drugged-out debauchery that has been done before, corrupt financial types that has done before, and astounding levels of gratuitous nudity that is probably the most original part. It was pretty entertaining, though, with Jonah Hill and Rob Reiner killing it. It only started to drag at the 2:40 mark, finally ending a minute shy of three hours. Scorsese overindulgent? Never!

The comedic elements were by far the second-best part. The dramatic aspects were the essence of nothing new, and the film jumps way too quickly from eager earnest DiCaprio on his first day to the ravenous creature he becomes. I like how we never see Kyle Chandler (who gives another good performance) except in scenes with DiCaprio, but then we are talking about a movie that is already three hours. I think the only scenes without DiCaprio at all are ones critical to the plot. Most of those involve Jon Berenthal, giving a much better and much more alive performance than the one in Mob City.

The best part of the movie, and I hate to be this guy, but damn.

Da-amn. Margot Robbie, of semi-recent television flop Pan Am, with lead actress screen time, and holding her own against DiCaprio's performance.

    I'll go B+. (A comedy, C+ drama, A+ intangibles)

Much like In Bruges, it requires repeat viewings. On my 10th, more or less, and the subtleties are...god help me...delicious. Why do I sould like Vincent Price all of a sudden?

Keerist this is overrated. And overhyped...overappreciated...excessive in all aspects. Scorsese already made Goodfellas. This is more like Casino. Over the top while forgetting the most important thing...you need to LIKE somebody, especially if your movie clocks in at almost 3 hours. 3 hours of too much sex, drugs and excess(which is ALMOST impossible). No balance, Even the 'good guys' represented by Kyle Chandler mostly...just seem to be buzz killing anal-blockage suffering 'if I can't enjoy my life neither will you' types. Misfires on almost ALL cylinders. Yet...despite the worst eyebrows in movie history...Leo actually convinced me he was someone else...instead of playing little man dress up. Lots of really good support. Jon 'Shane' Bernthal is particularly solid...but Jonah Hill...in a part that so delicately traipses back and forth on the CARTOON line...is tremendous. The ONLY nomination that should come out of this. And...sadly...supporting is a tough sled this year. But the kid is very very good. Better dramatic actor than comedic. I said it.

Not real good. Craig Robinson reduced to cringeworthy overtly sexual talk(no subtlety) and basically a meandering plot that kinda just happens. Lots of good folks try real hard(Tyler Labine, Ken Jeong, Rob Cordry, Thomas Lennon...etc) but more concept than execution. Worth a watch on Netflix/Cable...wish I hadn't bought.

So we took in quite a bit this Christmas break. First off introduced my oldest daughter (17 years old) to one of my favorite guilty pleasures (and she absolutely loved it):

Next we hit the theaters for two family movies:

Hanks was good (in his own way) but Emma Thompson is just wonderful and surprising Colin Farrell does an outstanding job as well as the rest of the cast of well known actors. And any Luther fans will notice a nice bit of work from "Alice" (gosh she is a looker!!).

My kids took me to see this and it wasn't bad but it wasn't really good either. Weak effort from Disney IMHO that will just drive a commercial tie-in somewhere for them to make $$.

Watched Upstream Color on Saturday. Absolutely HORRIBLE. 0.5/5. But still not as bad as Spring Breakers (a 0/5). LOL.

Watched Don Jon yesterday. Great cast. It was quite good. Some LOL moments with a more non-rom-com ending (4/5).
