'120 Minutes': MTV's Beloved '90s Alternative Rock Showcase Returns July 30 | TheWrap TV
Gonna have to DVR this for a couple weeks and see how it goes.New episodes of "120 Minutes," the seminal weekly celebration of so-called "post-modern" music that MTV launched in 1986 and cancelled in 2003, will return to MTV2 starting Saturday, July 30, at 1 a.m. ET (10 p.m. PT), the network announced Thursday.
**** yes! While exploring undersung bands will still be the focus of the series, Pinfield said in a press release that he will "now be expanding outside the alternative-music universe to feature a myriad of emerging artists and sounds from a variety of genres."
Translation: Expect to hear some hip-hop.
The debut episode will feature interviews with musicians Dave Grohl, PJ Harvey, Danger Mouse, Kings of Leon, Das Racist, Sleigh Bells, Lupe Fiasco, Black Angels, Theophilus London and Fitz and the Tantrums.
Ah. Ok. Can't really argue with that.
Pitchfork: Swans at Work on New Album
Last year, scarily intense postpunk/industrial originators Swans reunited and released My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky, a strong comeback album. And they're not stopping there. According to a press release, the band is currently at work on an as-yet-untitled follow-up album. They've just finished the first phase of recording in Berlin and will return to the recording process in Gardinier, New York in October, after their current tour. They plan to release the album early in 2012 on frontman Michael Gira's Young God Records.Meanwhile, Gira is currently putting together a Swans live album that will collect material from the band's recent shows. Some copies of this album may appear in stores, but Gira's mostly planning to release it in a limited handmade edition, with his own woodblock print and drawings, which will be exclusively available through the Young God website. The live album, which will be out in October, will be a benefit of sorts; sales will help pay for the new studio album's recording sessions.
Download: Salem, Gayngs And More Remix Blonde Redhead On Free EP
Download or stream the Remix EP right at that link.So it turns out that the Games (now Ford & Lopatin) and Becoming Real remixes of Blonde Redhead tracks we heard last December and earlier this week, respectively, have a final resting place. And no, it's not in your recently downloaded folder. The dream pop trio was apparently collecting the remixes so that they could put out a free EP of reworked material from last year's Penny Sparkle. The other acts involved on the project are Salem, Gayngs (!), Pantha Du Prince, and Kastellet. This is a pretty unexpected and, more importantly, great little gift from Blonde Redhead.
