You do have a thing for the overly artsy fartsy and dramatic. The quality of her voice is WAY better in Stories. Let England Shake sounds tin-y and shrill and annoying. It's like when she sings in that old crone voice she used in Nina in Ecstasy.
Btw, you're not pleased with anything unless it's depressing because someone either : died, lost a leg, got blinded, got raped, got butt raped, got murdered, had their kid killed, framed, set up, cheated on, shot, blown up, smashed...etc.
The only thing that's tragic that you don't particularly enjoy with when someone gets their dick cut off or testicles crushed.
I love Stories, don't get me wrong, but... I dunno, a couple tracks on it don't really do much for me. Let England Shake seemed a bit mild at first, but it's grown on me immensely. I think it's her best since Is This Desire? and I might even be willing to say it's better than that. Maybe.
The music doesn't have to be depressing and, despite the subject matter, Let England Shake doesn't depress me at all. Quite the opposite.
I haven't listened to Let England Shake as much as I should.

Dangerous Minds | Wonderful punk and post-punk era photographs by David Arnoff
Good readin'.David Arnoff: Nick is very easy and unaffected to work with. That shot with Harpo is the result of what started out as another cancelled session at the Tropicana Motel. He apologized for being up all night and indicated all the empty bottles on the TV as evidence, but was perfectly happy for me to carry on regardless even though he was not looking his best. The only downside was he was trying in vain to play “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” not really knowing the chords and the guitar was painfully out of tune. Not an enjoyable aural experience. He was quite happy with the photos though.
