The reviews for the new album online are getting a little over the top. Too bad we can't listen to them for ourselves yet.

Yeah, hard right now to separate the PR from the art.
The album leaked a week before its release. I guess that's a moral victory. Some songs pop up on youtube from time to time and then are taken down. Some are accessible right now there but I won't link to them since it's unauthorized. Lots of good songs though. It's not as good as the stuff from the classic period, but on first listen it sounds better than anything in the last 25 years. Gee I'm getting old.
I picked up the new record yesterday at BestBuy. Paid $9.99. Really well done. It's kind of a blend of sounds from various periods that sounds current, not retro. There's a riff from Seven Cities of Gold which could have been on the first record, although the overall song sounds nothing like that period. Some of Alex's solos remind me of his work in the early 80's. The closing song The Garden is a lush acoustic number that has Geddy signing as earnestly as he ever has. Peart's drumming just explodes all over the record. Can't believe these guys are pushing 60.
Yep. Will be picking it up through Amazon this weekend via download.
On first listen I have to admit I didn't get it. Guess I was expecting an albums worth of BU2B or Caravan. Then the second time I turned the volume up and I think that's what was missing. Overall I think it flows pretty good. It's easy to find pieces of their other work in here, but I like how it stands by itself against their other records. It will be interesting to see how it translates to stage given they will have strings for the shows from what I hear.
I think The Anarchist, The Garden and Headlong Flight are stronger songs than Caravan and BU2B. (I like them too.)
The overall collection is better than anything after Grace Under Pressure IMHO. I love how they have incorporated some elements from various periods without it sounding simply derivative.
