Saw it today. Keep going back and forth.

Johnny Depp was good as ever as Jack. Ian MacShane played the ruthless blackbeard very well. Geoffrey Rush was spot on. Even Penelope Cruz wasn't too bad (despite that a female probably wouldn't have lasted 2 seconds on one of those pirate ships).

There was the standard action scenes from ship to shore, the crazy movements of Jack Sparrow out-maneuvering 20 british soldiers, sword fights, all the standard fare. It was entertaining. And yet, about halfway through I couldn't find myself really caring that much of how it would end. Could've cut out about 30 minutes. The religious guy seemed very out of place (won't say more for spoiler sake) I don't know what it was, maybe a bit stretched at 2 and a half hours, maybe a little repetitve. Just didn't have the pull. Thumbs in the middle I suppose. But if you liked the first 3, there's probably a better shot you'll like this one as well than dislike.

P.S. I don't know who the girl is who played Syrena the mermaid. But, barring the storyline, I'm guessing many of you on here will be pleased.

On painful ‘Tides’

Truly, this film is the embarrassing, excruciating fourth installment of a franchise that bottomed out somewhere in the middle of the second. I wanted it to end the minute it started, and knowing there were over two hours to come, it was a trying, trying experience. The only thing that kept my attention was the placement of Penélope Cruz’s crucifix necklace.

Yeah, but admittedly they haven't liked the franchise since basically the first one. I have read a lot of reviews with these similar complaints. If I read one from someone who actually thinks the series has been good all around, yet they don't like this one, then I will be concerned.

Agreed, although my expectations for this one are still not high.

Dunno man, if any movies are indeed 'critic-proof' I am pretty sure these are the ones. First off, I think most critics really want to hate these movies because they just shouldn't succeed. I am going into this expecting 2 hours or so of simple popcorn flick and I really don't expect to be disappointed.
