I liked it. If it wasn't tied to Alien the reviews would be better, it's more sci fi than horror. Look up Chariots of the Gods?, pretty much the whole basis for the mythology of Prometheus.

I liked it but there was one major flaw in the story if it was to be a "prequil" of the original Alien.

At the ending, the "progenitor" dies in the escape pod with the "original queen alien" busting out of his chest. In the original Alien, the "progenitor's" mummified corpse with it's chest burst was found in the "comand chair" of the space craft.
I remember the prop of that was on display when I went to the "midnight" show when the movie opened at the Egyption Theater in Hollywood. Bad plot hole they missed.
Anyone that's like me and gets off on the mechanical design in these sorts of movies will like these:
All of these images and some more pretty damned incredible sci-fi art is on conceptships.blogspot.com.

Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Bullets are cheap. Life is priceless.

I thought that as well first, but ultimately I don't think it was the same ship or planet as in the first Alien movie. They wouldn't have missed it had they intended for it to be the same place, they could have easily made it so that he first made it back to the chair before he died and there's no way they just forgot the iconic original scene, so the only explanation that makes sense to me is that it's somewhere else.

My wife put it this way: Ridley Scott couldn't make up his mind which movie to make.
Too many holes.
I'll refrain from any spoilers until later.

I liked it. Then again I am not a slavish fan of the original. To say this has no ties to Alien(as they have in the past) is very much a straight lie. First off the effects work/3d/sound design...basically all of the technical elements of this film are about as spot on as possible. Stunning even. Some of the acting(Elba/Fassbender) is better than others(Theron/Raapace), but there are minor and major plot holes in this movie. From the fragile/not fragile status of the helmets, to the motivations of almost everyone involved and a whole lot of stuff inbetween. Oh yeah(pet peeve of mine) some of the worst aging makeup since Watchmen. Really bad. It just loses focus a lot of times. The conversation between Fassbender and that Tom Hardy lookalike guy about 'how disappointed would you be if you asked your creator...' was probably the high point of the movie as far as where the discussion/plot of the film should have been. Too many easy outs and not enough focus on answering questions that they asked made this less than it should have been. Overall, it was ambitious, but then it copped out. Still, for the technical qualities alone this is worth seeing.
